Cartilaginous fish have a skeleton made of cartilage rather than bone, which gives the group its name. Their rough skin is covered with fine tooth-shaped scales. Almost all live in the sea and breathe through gill slits visible on the flanks or underside. The group brings together sharks, rays and chimaeras.
