Choosing an animal's food means balancing its age, size, activity level and sometimes digestive sensitivities. A growing puppy, a neutered indoor cat and a working dog do not have the same nutritional needs, and an excellent food for one may be poorly suited to another.

Read the label before the price

The first ingredient listed indicates the main component. A protein source that is specifically named appears on quality foods, rather than a generic description. The protein and fat levels should then be considered in relation to the animal: a neutered cat easily gains weight, a senior dog needs high-quality protein without excess calories.

Kibble, wet food, or both

Kibble stores easily, can be measured precisely by the gram, and mechanically maintains dental health. Wet food provides water, which is particularly important for cats, whose thirst sensation is poorly developed. Many owners combine both: measured free-feeding kibble and wet food as meals.

Quantities matter as much as the brand

The portions indicated on packaging are averages, calculated for an animal with normal activity levels. An animal that goes outside rarely consumes less. Weighing the ration rather than estimating it by eye remains the simplest way to avoid gradual weight gain, which creeps up unnoticed.

Changing food without upsetting digestion

A transition should be made over seven to ten days, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food. A sudden change frequently causes temporary digestive upset, which is often wrongly attributed to the food itself.

For livestock, nutritional needs should be calculated by group and physiological stage rather than individually. If you have any doubts about a specific diet—overweight, digestive sensitivity, chronic illness—your veterinarian's advice takes precedence over any general recommendation.
