Transporting an animal is first and foremost a matter of safety — for the animal and for passengers alike. An animal loose in a vehicle becomes a projectile during hard braking, and a constant source of distraction for the driver.

Choosing the right size

The rule is simple: the animal must be able to stand without lowering its head, turn around, and lie down in a stretched-out position. A crate that's too large isn't more comfortable — it allows the animal to be tossed about with every turn. A crate that's too small is constraining. Measurements should be taken with the animal standing, from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, adding a few centimeters.

Soft carrier, rigid crate, or car harness

The soft carrier works for short trips and small animals; it slides under a seat and reassures with its enveloping nature. A rigid crate offers better protection in case of impact and cleans more easily. A harness attached to a seatbelt suits a dog already accustomed to the vehicle, for brief journeys.

Habituation makes all the difference

A carrier brought out only on vet visit days becomes a warning signal. Leaving it open in the living area, with familiar bedding and some treats inside, gradually transforms the object into a refuge. This habituation develops over weeks, not the night before departure.

Before a long trip

A light meal several hours beforehand limits nausea. Water should remain accessible during stops. A parked car in the sun reaches lethal temperatures within minutes, even with windows slightly open: an animal should never be left alone inside.
