Symptoms

Observable signs in animals, and the diseases that may be associated with them. A symptom is not a diagnosis: only a veterinarian can make one.

Abnormal hive odour

Smell of putrefaction or glue that is released when opening the hive.

Milk that is lumpy, watery, colored, or contains clots or blood.

The fish swims on its side, stays on the surface or on the bottom, or moves in fits and starts.

Unpleasant and persistent oral odor, most often of dental origin.

Bad ear odour

Unusual and strong odor that comes from the ear when approaching the animal's head.

Behaviour change

The animal is no longer itself: more fearful, more clingy, more irritable, for no apparent reason.

Black stools

Very dark, almost black, tarry-looking stools, different from the usual color.

Bloating

Visible distension of the abdomen or left flank due to accumulation of gas. In ruminants, acute bloat is an emergency.

Blood in stools

Red blood or black, tarry stools, indicating digestive bleeding.

Blood in urine

Pink, red or brown urine. May arise from the urinary tract or from destruction of red blood cells.

Bumping into objects

The animal bumps into furniture, looks for its bearings, hesitates in a place that it knows well.

Circling

Repeatedly moving in a circle, always in the same direction, or walking aimlessly against a wall.

Closed or half-closed eye

The animal keeps one eye closed or squints its eyelids, often avoiding light.

Cloudy or opaque eye

The transparency of the eye is lost: the pupil appears whitish, gray or milky instead of being black and clear.

Constant licking

Repeated and prolonged licking of the same area, sometimes until the hair disappears.

Constipation

Rare, hard or absent stools, sometimes accompanied by unsuccessful efforts.

Cough

Sudden and sonorous expulsion of air from the respiratory tract. May be dry or greasy, occasional or persistent.

Damaged fins

The fins are frayed, eaten away at the edges or covered with a veil.

Dandruff or flaking skin

White or grayish scales in the coat, dry skin that comes off in thin patches.

Dark urine

Brown, orange or port-colored urine, to be distinguished from simply concentrated urine.

Dead bees in front of the hive

Clusters of dead or dying bees on the flight board or at the foot of the hive.

Deformed wings

Bees are born with atrophied or crumpled wings and cannot fly.

Dehydration

Skin that remains wrinkled, sunken eyes, dry mucous membranes: the animal has lost too much water.

Dental tartar

Hard, yellow or brown deposit at the base of the teeth, especially visible on the back teeth.

Diarrhea

Loose or watery stools, more frequent than normal. Can lead to rapid dehydration, especially in young animals.

Difficult birthing

Prolonged efforts without expulsion, or intervention necessary to get the little one out.

Difficulty breathing

Rapid, noisy, or labored breathing. This is a sign of veterinary emergency.

Difficulty chewing

The animal chews on one side, drops its food, or only accepts soft foods.

Difficulty standing up

The animal tries several times to stand up, or uses the walls to help it.

Difficulty swallowing

The animal cranes its neck, spits out food or refuses to swallow.

Difficulty urinating

Straining to urinate with little or no urine output. In male cats, a urinary blockage is an absolute emergency.

Discharge from the eyes

Watery eyes or clear to purulent discharge from the eyes, in one or both eyes.

Drinks a lot

Marked increase in drinking (polydipsia), often associated with more abundant urine.

Drop in egg laying

The number of eggs laid drops significantly compared to previous weeks.

Dull coat

Dry, pitted, lackluster coat, sometimes with dandruff — common sign of chronic illness or deficiency.
