Choosing well: Toys and Accessories
Play is not a luxury—it's a necessity. A bored animal develops unwanted behaviors that owners then complain about: destruction, vocalization, excessive grooming, nighttime restlessness. Most of these behaviors drop significantly when daily physical and mental exercise is adequate.
Indoor cats still hunt
An indoor cat retains its complete hunting sequence: spotting, stalking, pouncing, capturing. A feather wand, a tossed toy mouse, or a ball track replay this sequence. Two short sessions a day work better than one long one: cats hunt in bursts, not endurance. Ending the session with a successful "capture" followed by a meal respects their natural rhythm and encourages the calm that follows.
Dogs need to chew and forage
Dogs tire through their nose too. A puzzle toy that makes them work for their kibble exhausts them more than an equivalent walk. Chew toys meet a real need, provided they suit the dog's bite force: a toy too soft for a mastiff becomes dangerous within minutes.
Size is a safety factor
A toy must be too large to swallow, even after wear. Detachable parts—glued-on eyes, squeakers, strings—need regular checks, and a damaged toy should be removed. String, yarn, and elastic bands are highly appealing to cats but pose serious ingestion risks and have no place in toys left accessible.
Rotate rather than accumulate
An animal loses interest in what it sees every day. Keep some toys stored away and swap them weekly to renew interest at no extra cost. Three toys in rotation beat ten left on the floor permanently.
