Octopuses have three hearts and blue blood.
The octopus's circulatory system is remarkably adapted to marine life. Two of its three hearts pump blood to the gills for oxygenation, while the third supplies the rest of the body. This blood contains hemocyanin, a blue protein that binds oxygen far more efficiently than the red hemoglobin found in vertebrates, especially in cold, low-oxygen waters.
This blood composition gives the octopus significant evolutionary advantages in its environment. Hemocyanin enables better resistance to temperature and pressure variations in the deep seafloor where these cephalopods live. The three-heart system, though energetically costlier, ensures optimal circulation through a soft, flexible body capable of extraordinary contortions.
