The dromedary possesses a remarkable hydration capacity that allows it to drink colossal amounts of water in very little time. This extraordinary performance is made possible by the unique structure of its red blood cells which, unlike those of other mammals, can dilate without rupture when they absorb water. This adaptation allows it to store water and distribute it gradually to its tissues.
This physiological feat is crucial for the dromedary's survival in desert environments where water is rare and unpredictable. After drinking such a quantity, the camel can travel for weeks without access to water thanks to its adapted metabolism and body reserves, particularly its famous hump which stores fats rather than water, contrary to common belief.
