The pink flamingo owes its color to the crustaceans on which it feeds.
The characteristic pink color of the flamingo comes directly from its diet rich in carotenoids, natural pigments abundant in algae and microscopic crustaceans. By feeding mainly on small crustaceans containing these pigments, the flamingo gradually accumulates them in its feathers, giving rise to its distinctive pink hue. Without this regular consumption of carotenoids, its plumage would become white or grayish.
The pink color of the flamingo is not limited to aesthetics: it also indicates the nutritional status and health of the bird. Individuals with the brightest and most intense hues attract potential partners more during reproduction, making this coloration a signal of vigor and good diet in natural selection.
