The fennec fox hears its prey moving under the desert sand.
The fennec possesses the largest ears proportionally to head size among all canids, with ear flaps representing up to 20% of its total body surface. These giant ears serve not only for hearing but also for thermoregulation in the scorching desert. Their highly sensitive structure captures the minute vibrations produced by small rodents and insects moving beneath the sand, allowing the fennec to precisely locate its prey even in complete darkness.
This sensory adaptation is crucial for survival in the deserts of the Sahara and Middle East, where prey is scattered and difficult to see. The fennec can rotate its ears independently in various directions, a major advantage for three-dimensional sound localization. This sophisticated hunting technique, combined with its small size and furry feet, makes the fennec a formidable nocturnal predator despite weighing only 1.5 kilograms.
