Presentation
Bonito is a pelagic fish from the Scombridae family, close to tuna and mackerel. It lives in schools in the temperate and tropical waters of the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Its fusiform body and characteristic oblique stripes allow it to swim quickly in open water. It constitutes an important species for artisanal and industrial fishing in the Mediterranean, particularly in Tunisia. Its flesh is appreciated as human food, fresh or canned.
The Bonito (Sarda sarda) has an elongated, fusiform body adapted to fast swimming. Its back is marked with characteristic oblique blue-black bands on a silver background. It has two closely spaced dorsal fins and a powerful forked caudal fin.
Characteristics
Indicative values: they vary by subspecies, sex and region.
Habitat and distribution
Bonito frequents coastal waters and the open sea, generally on the surface and in the intermediate water column. It likes areas where currents concentrate plankton and small fish. It is present in the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the temperate Atlantic.
CURRENT RANGE
Bonito is present in the North and South Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. In Tunisia, it is fished along the coasts, particularly in the Gulf of Tunis and Gabès. It makes seasonal movements depending on the water temperature.
Behaviour
The Bonito is a gregarious species which travels in often numerous schools. It carries out seasonal migrations linked to reproduction and the availability of prey. It is a fast and active swimmer, capable of pursuing its prey over short distances at high speed.
Reproduction
Breeding occurs in spring and summer in warmer coastal waters. Females lay large numbers of pelagic eggs which drift with the plankton. The larvae develop in open water before gradually joining the juvenile schools.
Peculiarities
Its name is sometimes a source of confusion with tuna, to which it is closely related. Its distinct oblique dorsal stripes make it easy to differentiate it from other Scombridae. It is capable of swimming in coordinated groups to bring down schools of prey.
Threats and conservation
Overfishing is the main threat to Bonito populations in the Mediterranean. The degradation of coastal habitats and the scarcity of its prey can also affect its local populations. However, it remains a widely distributed species and not globally threatened.
Numbers and trends vary across sources and regions. See the IUCN assessment for the latest reference data.
