Presentation

The Atlantic bluefin tuna is one of the largest and most powerful fish in the Scombrid family. It is a migratory pelagic predator, recognizable by its massive fusiform body, its retractile fins and its blue-black coloring on the back contrasting with a silvery belly. This cold and temperate water fish is able to maintain its body temperature above that of the water, allowing it exceptional performance.

The body of the Atlantic bluefin tuna is robust and hydrodynamic, designed for fast swimming. Its pectoral and pelvic fins retract into furrows to reduce drag. The skin is smooth and thick. Its eyes are large and adapted for depth vision, while its gills efficiently extract oxygen at high speeds.

CURRENT RANGE

The Atlantic Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is distributed in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean. There is another species, the Pacific Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis), in the Pacific Northwest. From the Eastern Atlantic to the European and North African coasts, the species carries out significant migrations depending on the seasons and the availability of resources.

Behaviour

The Atlantic bluefin tuna is a highly migratory fish that undertakes long seasonal transoceanic migrations. It is very active and must swim continuously to breathe and maintain body heat. These fish often form schools, sometimes with other species. Their keen vision and sense of smell allow them to efficiently locate food sources.

Reproduction

The Atlantic bluefin tuna reaches sexual maturity between 8 and 12 years of age. Breeding takes place in summer in specific areas like the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Mexico. Females are extremely fertile, laying several million eggs. The larvae are pelagic and develop in the open sea.

Peculiarities

The Atlantic bluefin tuna has a remarkable particularity: it is one of the rare fish capable of endothermic thermoregulation, maintaining its body temperature up to 14°C above that of the surrounding water thanks to its muscles. This adaptation allows it to swim at exceptional speeds (up to 70 km/h) and to explore very cold waters.
