A 4-day-old calf showed seven swellings along its left side, revealing a very rare vascular disease.

What happened?

A 4-day-old male Japanese Black calf was brought in because the owner had noticed several lumps under the skin on the left side of its chest. These seven swellings were lined up from the back toward the belly. The calf was also in poor general condition.

What did the vet find?

The veterinarian found seven masses under the skin of varying sizes, aligned along the left side of the chest. Ultrasound showed homogeneous masses located between the skin and muscles, with poor blood flow inside them. The CT scan revealed that some left ribs were deformed, pushed inward into the chest by the masses. A biopsy showed the masses contained many small immature blood vessels, confirming a rare vascular disease called juvenile angiomatosis.

What did the vet do?

ℹ️ Treatment given to THIS animal, decided by its veterinarian. It is not a prescription: never apply it without veterinary advice.
After examination by ultrasound, CT scan, and biopsy, the prognosis was very poor because of the calf's fragile general condition. No treatment could save the animal given the disease, so it was euthanized three days later to avoid further suffering.

    ① Before treatment

Seven aligned lumps are visible under the skin on the left side of the calf's chest.

    ② Examination

Ultrasound and CT scanning helped locate the seven masses and their relationship to the muscles and ribs.

What happened next?

The calf's general condition remained poor and the prognosis was considered unfavorable. Three days after the examinations, it was euthanized. The necropsy confirmed the masses also involved the muscles and revealed small nodules on the heart and swollen lymph nodes.

Advice for the farmer

This disease is a rare congenital vascular abnormality, not an infection: there is no known prevention, but any multiple swellings in a newborn should be examined quickly.
