Buying a cat or kitten in Tunisia

Persian, Siamese, Sphynx, Maine Coon or European shorthair: each breed has its own temperament and needs. The Persian needs regular brushing, the Sphynx is sensitive to cold, the Siamese is very sociable and talkative.

Ask for the health record (vaccines against feline panleukopenia and cat flu), the date of the last deworming, and check that the kitten is lively, clean and curious. Runny eyes or a swollen belly should alert you.

👀

See the animal before paying

Meet the seller and the animal in person, ideally at their home or in a public place.

💸

Never pay a deposit remotely

Do not send any money (transfer, money order, top-up) before seeing the animal: it is the most common scam.

📒

Ask for the health record

Vaccination record, deworming, identification: a serious seller shows them without hesitation.

🩺

Visit a veterinarian

Have the animal examined by a veterinarian in the days following the purchase.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can a kitten leave its mother?

Ideally between 8 and 12 weeks: it learns essential behaviours from its mother and littermates. A kitten separated too early is often more fearful.

Which documents should I ask the seller for?

The health record with vaccines and deworming, and the pedigree if the cat is sold as a purebred.

How do I know if the price is fair?

Compare with listings of the same breed and age using the price sort. A purebred cat without any document is not worth the price of a registered one.

What should I do after buying?

See a veterinarian for a check-up, the next vaccines and, later, neutering if you do not plan to breed.
