A routine pregnancy check revealed a severely malformed fetus growing outside its protective sac.

What happened?

A primiparous Jersey-Holstein crossbred cow was examined 56 days after insemination for routine pregnancy diagnosis. On palpation, the uterus seemed smaller than expected for that stage of pregnancy. The vet then decided to perform an ultrasound to investigate further.

What did the vet find?

The ultrasound confirmed a pregnancy in the right uterine horn with a corpus luteum on the matching ovary. The fetus was extremely deformed, with no limbs and no hind part of the body, only the chest and neck area being recognizable. Its heart was still beating, but it was smaller than normal for its age. The vet also noticed the fetus was located outside the fluid-filled amniotic sac, with band-like fibrous structures attached to it.

What did the vet do?

ℹ️ Treatment given to THIS animal, decided by its veterinarian. It is not a prescription: never apply it without veterinary advice.
Given these severe malformations incompatible with a normal pregnancy, the vet induced abortion with a hormonal injection. It was not possible to recover the expelled fetus, as it was likely swept away by the barn's automatic manure scraper.

What happened next?

After one rest cycle, the cow was inseminated again, and this time the pregnancy went normally, ending in an uncomplicated calving.

Advice for the farmer

This case shows the value of early ultrasound pregnancy checks: they allow serious abnormalities to be detected early, so action can be taken before bigger problems arise for the cow.
