The axolotl is a fascinating aquatic salamander native to Mexico, characterized by its retention of larval features throughout adult life. This biological phenomenon, called neoteny, makes the axolotl a unique animal extensively studied by scientists. Though critically endangered in the wild, the species survives through captive populations, particularly in research and aquaculture.
The axolotl has an elongated, smooth body with distinctive feathery external gills and a small head with lidless eyes. Its skin is smooth and moist, typically pale pink, white, or dark depending on captive breeding varieties. It possesses four short, delicate legs and a long laterally-flattened tail used for swimming.

Habitat and distribution
The axolotl is endemic to mountain lakes in central Mexico, particularly Lake Xochimilco located at approximately 2,300 meters elevation. It prefers cold, fresh, stagnant waters richly vegetated with muddy or sandy bottom zones. The species favors low-light conditions and temperatures between 14 and 20°C.
CURRENT RANGE
The axolotl is strictly endemic to Mexico, where its wild presence is now restricted to a few residual areas of Lake Xochimilco and its adjacent channels, near Mexico City. In the wild, the species is virtually extinct. However, significant populations exist in laboratories, research institutions and aquariums worldwide.
Behaviour
The axolotl is a relatively passive and solitary aquatic animal, spending most of its time on the bottom or near submerged vegetation. It rarely emerges from water but can breathe atmospheric air through rudimentary lungs. Though apparently placid, it responds to disturbance by rapid flight, and can completely regenerate its limbs and spinal cord.
Reproduction
The axolotl is a dioecious animal reproducing exclusively in aquatic environments. Reproduction begins with complex courtship displays by the male who deposits spermatophores. The female captures and integrates them to fertilize her eggs, then laying hundreds of sticky eggs on vegetation or surfaces. Larvae hatch after two weeks and feed on their initial yolk sac.
Peculiarities
The axolotl's major characteristic is its complete neoteny: it retains its external gills and aquatic breathing mode throughout its life without undergoing metamorphosis into a terrestrial form. Exceptionally, under stress (pH change, high temperature, low water levels) or with hormonal treatment, it may undergo metamorphosis and become terrestrial. It is also a remarkable champion of regeneration.
Threats and conservation
The axolotl faces critical extinction threats primarily due to drastic destruction of its natural habitat. Lake Xochimilco has been largely drained, polluted and urbanized during the 20th century. The introduction of predatory fish, fragmentation of aquatic ecosystems and contamination by wastewater constitute major additional threats to the few remaining wild populations.
