CURRENT RANGE

Originally from China, Goldfish was domesticated for over a thousand years before spreading across the world, notably to Japan and Europe. Today, it is present on all continents, mainly in aquariums. It is not naturally present in Tunisia.

Behaviour

The Goldfish is active and curious, constantly swimming in search of food. It is gregarious and enjoys the company of other conspecifics, creating a stable social hierarchy. It responds well to training and recognizes its owners, showing remarkable intelligence for a small fish.

Reproduction

The Goldfish reaches sexual maturity around 2-3 years old. Breeding occurs in spring when the temperature increases. The male chases the female and stimulates her to release her eggs, which are then fertilized. Young fry emerge in 5 to 7 days depending on water temperature.

Peculiarities

The Goldfish has remarkable memory ability and can remember its environment and its feeders. It can live for several decades in optimal conditions, much longer than many enthusiasts believe. Some selected varieties have elongated fins or spectacular protruding eyes.
