This disease usually appears when the aquarium water is poor quality or when the animal is already weakened or injured. It can interfere with the axolotl's breathing because the gills are its main organ for gas exchange in water.

Affected gills take on a fuzzy, cottony, or grayish appearance, somewhat like cotton placed on the gill filaments. They may appear discolored, damaged, or less spread out than usual. The axolotl may rub itself against décor or the tank floor, seems less lively, refuses food, and remains still in a corner. In advanced cases, the gill filaments become necrotic and shorten, and the animal may show signs of respiratory distress such as jerky swimming movements toward the surface.

Causes and risk factors
The fungus responsible, usually of the type Saprolegnia or related forms, occurs naturally in freshwater. It becomes pathogenic when it finds a point of entry: a small wound on the gills, significant stress, or an immune system weakened by poor living conditions. It acts as an opportunist rather than a primary infectious agent in a healthy animal.
Poor water quality—high ammonia, elevated nitrites, or infrequently changed water—is the main risk factor. Water temperature above the axolotl's tolerance range weakens the animal. Gill injuries caused by aggressive tank mates, sharp decorations, or mishandling with a net create an entry point for infection. Stress from transport, an undersized tank, or incompatible tank mates also plays a role.
Transmission
The fungus naturally occurs in freshwater and is not transmitted directly from one animal to another in a typical contagious manner; it rather takes advantage of poor water quality or wounds to develop.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The exotic animal veterinarian directly observes the gills and overall appearance of the axolotl. A sample of gill tissue can be collected and examined under a microscope to confirm the presence of fungal filaments. The water quality in the tank is also assessed, as this is key to diagnosis and management.
Treatment
Treatment relies on immediate improvement of water quality and, if needed, antifungal baths appropriate for amphibians, prescribed and dosed by the veterinarian. In some cases, supportive treatment against secondary bacterial infections may be added. Isolating the affected animal in a clean hospital tank also facilitates recovery.

Prevention
Keeping the water clean and well-filtered, with regular water changes, is the best prevention. Monitor aquarium temperature to remain within the axolotl's comfort range, as it is a cool-water animal. Avoiding rough or sharp decorations and limiting unnecessary handling reduces the risk of injury. Quarantining new animals or plants before adding them to the main tank is also recommended.
Possible complications
Extensive gill involvement can lead to respiratory distress, as the axolotl can no longer exchange oxygen properly. A secondary bacterial infection can develop on damaged fungal tissue. In severe, untreated cases, the outcome may be fatal.
