Prophet Sulayman (Solomon), upon whom be peace, was advancing one day at the head of an immense army, gathering men, jinn and birds, when the procession arrived at the edge of a valley. It was there that an event occurred, one reported in the Qur'an, an event so delicate that it has remained engraved in the memory of believers as one of the finest examples of mercy toward the smallest creatures.

The Valley of Ants

The Qur'an recounts, in Surah An-Naml ("The Ants"), that Sulayman's procession arrived near a valley inhabited by ants. One of them, seeing this vast army approach, cried out to warn her companions of the imminent danger.

﴿ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا أَتَوْا عَلَىٰ وَادِ النَّمْلِ قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّمْلُ ادْخُلُوا مَسَاكِنَكُمْ لَا يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ سُلَيْمَانُ وَجُنُودُهُ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ ﴾

"When they came upon the valley of ants, an ant said: 'O ants, enter your dwellings, lest Sulayman and his soldiers crush you without realizing it.'"

(Surah An-Naml, verse 18)

Sulayman's Smile

What strikes one in this account is Prophet Sulayman's reaction. By virtue of the knowledge of languages that Allah had granted him—a gift unique among the prophets—he understood the words of the tiny ant. Far from remaining unmoved, he smiled with joy and gratitude, as the next verse of the same surah clarifies, where he calls upon Allah to thank Him for this blessing and to guide him toward deeds pleasing to Him.

It is related by several Qur'anic commentators that Sulayman, upon hearing this warning, immediately ordered his army to halt, giving the ants time to return to their dwellings in safety. Thus an army composed of thousands of men, jinn and birds suspended its march so as not to cause harm to a creature so tiny that it usually goes unnoticed.

A Lesson for All Times

This Qur'anic passage teaches several essential things. First, that the greatness of a king or leader never exempts one from responsibility toward the weakest. Next, that every creature, however small, possesses organization, communication and value in the sight of Allah. According to certain exegetes, this account also illustrates the humility that must be preserved by anyone who holds great power: Sulayman, despite his vast kingdom, did not neglect the life of an ant.

• The ant warns her fellows by instinct of collective preservation.
• Sulayman understands their language through a divine gift.
• The entire army halts out of respect for this small life.

Thus this episode concludes: not through power that crushes, but through power that bows before fragility. This is the whole nobility of Prophet Sulayman, whose heart remained attentive even to the whisper of an ant in the sand.

This story, so often cited, reminds each of us of a simple and precious truth: no creature is too small to deserve our attention and our gentleness. Whether an ant in a garden, an injured bird or any other animal met on our path, the example of Sulayman invites us to slow down, to observe, and to preserve life wherever it is found.
