What Can We Learn from the Ant About Organization and Prudence?

On a valley path, a small ant spots Prophet Sulaymân's army and cries out to her sisters to take shelter. This simple warning contains a lesson in organization, prudence, and animal wisdom.

In the account of Prophet Sulaymân (Solomon), alayhi salam, the Quran reports a striking scene: as the prophet walked with his great army composed of men, jinn, and birds, he passed through a valley inhabited by ants. One of them, catching sight of this procession approaching, gave warning to her companions.

The Ant's Alarm Call

The Quran conveys her exact words in Surah An-Naml, which means "The Ants":

﴿ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا أَتَوْا عَلَىٰ وَادِ النَّمْلِ قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّمْلُ ادْخُلُوا مَسَاكِنَكُمْ لَا يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ سُلَيْمَانُ وَجُنُودُهُ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ ﴾

"When they came to the valley of the ants, an ant said: 'O ants, enter your dwellings, lest Solomon and his soldiers crush you unaware.'"

(Surah An-Naml, verse 18)

This verse, often cited, brings to light several remarkable qualities attributed to this tiny creature. First, her capacity for observation: she spots the danger before it becomes too late. Next, her sense of collective responsibility: she does not merely save herself, but alerts the entire community. Finally, her clarity of mind: she notes that Sulaymân and his army would not even realize what they were doing, thus acknowledging that there was no malice on their part, only an unintended risk.

Prophet Sulaymân's Response

The following verse in the same passage reports that Sulaymân, alayhi salam, smiled upon hearing these words and thanked Allah for granting him the understanding of the language of ants, a special favor bestowed upon this prophet among his other gifts. This scene illustrates the prophet's sensitivity toward the life of even the smallest of creatures: he did not ignore her, but welcomed her words with gratitude and humility, recognizing the wisdom hidden even in such a minute being.

A Lesson in Organization and Prudence

Beyond the Quranic anecdote, the ant has long been recognized, including in tradition and folk wisdom, as a model of social organization. Each ant seems to know its role: some guard the colony, others search for food, still others tend to the eggs. This collective organization, combined with the prudence displayed by the ant in the verse—who anticipates danger rather than waiting to be struck by it—invites us to reflect on our own relationship with vigilance and solidarity.

Moreover, it is reported in an authentic hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ forbade killing ants without legitimate cause, thus recalling the respect owed to this creature, even outside the context of Sulaymân's account.

What This Teaches Us Today

This story, brief though it may be in the Quranic text, continues to inspire reflection and respect. It reminds us that even the smallest beings possess intelligence, organization, and an ability to alert others that deserve our consideration. Far from being insignificant pests, ants embody a lesson in prudence and solidarity that can be observed directly in nature, without need for grand speeches.

Through this account, we come to understand how deeply kindness toward animals, even the most inconspicuous, is woven into Islamic teaching. To watch an anthill with attention, to refrain from needlessly destroying a nest, or simply to marvel at the organization of these tiny creatures, is to carry forward that spirit of respect for all life that the prophetic tradition invites us to cultivate.
