Why does a hen need phosphorus as well as calcium?

Phosphorus does not work against calcium—they work together. What matters is not the amount of each mineral on its own, but their ratio, ideally around 2 to 1 in favor of calcium. Giving calcium alone, without phosphorus or vitamin D, is not enough to build a strong shell or a healthy skeleton.
A balance of three, not two
Calcium and phosphorus are both incorporated into bone and shell as phosphate and calcium carbonate. Too much phosphorus relative to calcium blocks the intestinal absorption of calcium, because both minerals compete for the same transport pathways. Conversely, too much calcium without enough phosphorus disrupts bone mineralization. This is why poultry rations formulated by nutritionists target a precise calcium-to-phosphorus ratio rather than isolated nutrient levels.
Vitamin D3 is the element that makes this balance possible: it enables the active absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the intestines and their mobilization in bones. However, hens produce some of their vitamin D3 in the skin when exposed to UVB rays. A hen kept indoors without enough natural light can develop a deficiency even if feed is correctly balanced with minerals.

For laying hens, the stakes are even higher: shell formation uses a large amount of calcium every day, much of it drawn from bone marrow reserves if feed intake is insufficient or poorly balanced with phosphorus.
Signs of an imbalance
An incorrect calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, or a lack of vitamin D, shows up as soft, thin, or missing shells, fragile bones that lead to lameness and fractures, or even a complete stop in laying. Ground oyster shells, often given as a supplement, provide only calcium: they cannot replace a balanced ration with adequate phosphorus and vitamin D, and an excess may even worsen the imbalance. When these signs appear, advice from a veterinarian is essential for adjusting the diet.
