What is it?
Coccidiosis is a parasitic intestinal disease caused by tiny single-celled parasites called coccidia, usually belonging to the genus Eimeria or Isospora. In weasels (Mustela nivalis), as in other small wild carnivores, these parasites multiply within the cells lining the inside of the intestine. This multiplication damages the intestinal wall and disrupts digestion. The disease primarily affects young animals, whose immune system has not yet learned to control the parasite. In healthy adults, infection often remains silent.

The most common signs are diarrhea, sometimes tinged with blood or mucus, accompanied by general lethargy. The animal eats less and loses weight rapidly, which is particularly dangerous in an animal as small as a weasel. Vomiting may appear. In young animals, stunted growth and a dull coat are often observed. Dehydration sets in quickly with severe diarrhea, as fluid losses are proportionally more serious in such a small animal. In severe cases, the animal may become very weak and remain prostrate.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by coccidia, parasitic protozoans that invade the cells of the intestinal wall. The parasite multiplies inside these cells and then destroys them by rupturing to release new infectious forms, called oocysts. These oocysts are then shed in the feces and can contaminate the environment, water, or food.
Recently weaned young weasels are most at risk, as their immunity is still immature. A damp, dirty, or overcrowded environment—such as in captivity or at wildlife care centers—promotes the buildup of oocysts. Stress from injury, transport, or other illness weakens natural defenses and facilitates clinical expression of coccidiosis. Poor nutrition or concurrent infection with other parasites also worsens the condition.
Transmission
Transmission occurs via the fecal-oral route: the animal ingests oocysts present in an environment soiled by contaminated feces, in drinking water, or on infected prey. Stress, overcrowding, and poor sanitation favor the spread of oocysts and increase the risk of heavy infection.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
A veterinarian suspects coccidiosis when a young animal has diarrhea, then confirms the diagnosis by microscopic examination of feces to identify characteristic oocysts. Additional tests may be recommended if the animal shows signs of severe dehydration or marked weakness, to assess its general condition before any treatment begins.
Treatment
Treatment relies on specific antiparasitic drugs called anticoccidials, prescribed only by a veterinarian. Rehydration, given by mouth or injection depending on severity, is often needed to replace losses from diarrhea. Nutritional support suited to such a fragile animal is essential during recovery.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies chiefly on hygiene: regular cleaning of areas where the animal lives, prompt removal of droppings, and disinfection of surfaces, particularly in captive settings or wildlife rehabilitation centers. Overcrowding should be avoided and appropriate feeding maintained to support natural immunity. In care facilities, isolating sick young animals limits transmission to others.
Possible complications
Without prompt care, severe dehydration can set in quickly given the animal's small size, threatening survival. Significant intestinal damage can cause lasting malnutrition and stunted growth in young animals. Secondary bacterial infections may also develop on top of the initial intestinal injury.

The prognosis is generally good in healthy adults treated promptly. It is more guarded in very young animals or when treatment is delayed, due to the risk of rapid dehydration seen in small mammals. Early intervention greatly improves the chances of complete recovery.

Can ferret coccidiosis be transmitted to humans or domestic animals?
Coccidia are generally specific to a host or a group of closely related species. The risk of transmission to humans is considered negligible, but contact with other small wild or domestic carnivores should remain cautious in case of doubt.
Can an adult weasel be a carrier without being sick?
Yes, a healthy adult animal can harbour coccidia without showing visible symptoms, while occasionally excreting oocysts in its faeces.
How long does healing take?
This depends on the initial severity and how quickly treatment is started. With appropriate treatment, improvement in digestive symptoms is often seen within a few days, but ongoing veterinary monitoring of weight and general condition remains recommended.
How to prevent other young people from being infected in a healthcare facility?
The isolation of sick animals, frequent cleaning of enclosures and strict hygiene of equipment used greatly limit the spread of oocysts to other animals in the facility.
