Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when a caiman's body temperature exceeds the limit its body can tolerate. \n\nUnlike mammals, the caiman is a cold-blooded animal (ectothermic): it does not regulate its temperature by sweating or panting effectively. It depends entirely on its environment to warm or cool itself. \n\nWhen it cannot reach an area of ​​shade or cool water, for example in poorly equipped captivity or during transport, its internal temperature rises quickly and can seriously damage its organs.

The first signs are often discreet: the animal becomes abnormally agitated, tries to escape the heat source or, on the contrary, seems prostrate. \n\nWe then observe rapid breathing, the mouth open for a prolonged period (the caiman tries to evacuate heat through the oral mucosa), excessive salivation and disordered movements. \n\nIn severe cases, the animal presents tremors, loss of coordination, then convulsions. Outdoor enclosures without shaded areas or permanent access to a pool of fresh water greatly increase the risk, as do periods of high summer heat, which are frequent in Tunisia. \n\nTransport in a non-air-conditioned vehicle, a tank or transport crate exposed directly to the sun, pond water that has become too hot, or a breakdown of the misting or air conditioning system in captivity are also contributing factors. \n\nYoung animals and weakened or sick subjects are less tolerant of extreme thermal variations.

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Prevention

Prevention is based above all on appropriate layout of the habitat: always provide a permanently accessible shaded area and a pool of water large and cool enough for the animal to be able to immerse itself completely. \n\nIt is necessary to monitor the temperature of the enclosure, especially in summer, and avoid any direct and prolonged exposure to the sun without escape. \n\nFor transport, favor cool times of the day, use ventilated containers and never leave the animal in direct sunlight, even for a few minutes, especially in a closed vehicle. \n\nRegular monitoring of equipment (heating, misting, water filtration) helps avoid dangerous breakdowns.

Possible complications

Severe heat stroke can lead to kidney damage, muscle damage, lasting neurological problems and, in the most severe cases, death of the animal. \n\nEven after apparent recovery, internal after-effects may persist for several days.
