We are speaking here not of a "disease" in the classical veterinary sense, but of biological damage caused by a xylophagous insect (one that feeds on wood) to a host tree. This phenomenon concerns arboriculture, forestry, and ornamental trees, and does not affect animal health in the traditional sense, but remains important to understand for the management of green spaces and orchards in Tunisia.

The affected tree often shows gradual weakening that is difficult to detect at first. Sparse or yellowed foliage may be observed, along with slowed growth, and sometimes dieback of certain branches. Small round or oval exit holes appear on the bark, left by adults as they emerge. Fine sawdust (called frass) may accumulate at the base of the trunk or in bark fissures. In advanced cases, bark can flake off in sheets and the wood sounds hollow when tapped. The trunk or branches become structurally weak and may break more easily during strong winds or under the weight of fruit.

Damage is caused by longhorn beetle larvae (family Cerambycidae), which tunnel through living wood, either beneath the bark or deep within it depending on the species. The adult female lays her eggs in bark crevices, wounds, or weakened wood. After hatching, the larva feeds on wood for several months to several years depending on the species, before transforming into an adult and emerging by boring a characteristic hole.
Trees that are already stressed, injured, aged or poorly maintained are more susceptible to attack. Water stress, improper pruning, unprotected wounds or high planting density favour larval establishment. Certain species (citrus, olives, fruit trees, poplars, ornamental trees) are more regularly affected depending on the longhorn beetle species present locally.

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on direct observation of the tree: checking for exit holes, sawdust, areas of loose bark, and assessing the overall vigor of the foliage. A professional (arborist, agricultural technician, or entomologist) can confirm the presence of larvae by probing the wood or identifying captured adults. In some cases, more detailed inspection of the trunk (probe, resistograph) allows evaluation of the extent of internal damage and risk of branch failure.
Treatment
There is no simple curative treatment once larvae are deeply established in the wood. Management relies on cultural measures (pruning infested parts, removing dead wood) and, depending on the case, on judicious use of specific insecticides applied by trained professionals in compliance with local regulations. Biological control (natural enemies, entomopathogenic nematodes) is sometimes used as a complement within an integrated management approach.

Regular monitoring of trunks and branches allows early detection of infestation signs (holes, sawdust, abnormal bark).
