Guinea pig dermatomycosis, also called ringworm, is an infection of the skin and hair caused by microscopic fungi called dermatophytes. The fungus most often involved in guinea pigs is called Trichophyton mentagrophytes. This disease mainly affects the skin of the face, back and legs. It is very common in guinea pigs, particularly in young animals, stressed animals or animals living in large groups. It is a disease transmissible to humans, which makes it a subject of vigilance for the whole family.

The first signs are often hairless, rounded, well-demarcated areas, especially around the eyes, nose and ears.
The skin in this area may become red, dry and covered with small crusts or whitish flakes.
Some guinea pigs scratch, but others show no visible itch, which can delay the discovery of the disease.
The hair around the affected areas sometimes becomes brittle or dull.
In more severe cases, the lesions can extend to a large part of the body, particularly in animals whose immune defenses are weakened.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by microscopic fungi called dermatophytes, which feed on the surface layer of skin, hair and sometimes claws.
In guinea pigs, the species most frequently responsible is Trichophyton mentagrophytes.
These fungi produce very resistant spores in the environment, capable of surviving for a long time on litter, objects or hands.
Young guinea pigs and older animals are more susceptible, as are those whose immune systems are weakened by stress, chronic illness or an unbalanced diet.
Living in large groups, damp or poorly maintained litter, and an overcrowded or poorly ventilated environment also favor the appearance and spread of the disease.
The introduction of a new animal without an observation period is a common cause of introduction of the fungus into a farm or household.
Transmission
Transmission occurs through direct contact with an infected animal, or indirectly through contact with contaminated materials such as litter, cages, brushes or a person's hands.
The fungus spores can survive for several months in the environment, which explains why the disease sometimes reappears after treatment if cleaning has not been thorough.
The disease is also transmissible to humans and other pets such as cats, dogs or rabbits.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian examines the skin and hair, sometimes using a special lamp, although not all fungi react to this examination.
The definitive diagnosis is based on a sample of hair or scales sent to the laboratory for culturing or further analysis.
This examination also makes it possible to precisely identify the species of fungus in question.
Treatment
Treatment generally combines an antifungal applied locally to the skin and, in extensive cases, an antifungal given systemically.
Thorough cleaning of the environment with suitable products is essential in addition to medical treatment, to avoid reinfection by spores present in the cage or accessories.
The veterinarian adapts the duration and type of treatment according to the extent of the lesions and the general condition of the animal.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Good cage and litter hygiene, with regular cleaning and complete drying, limits the survival of spores in the environment.
It is recommended to quarantine any new guinea pig before introducing it to other animals in the household.
Avoiding overcrowding, ensuring a balanced diet rich in vitamin C and limiting sources of stress strengthen the skin's natural defenses.
Washing your hands after each handling, especially if an animal has suspicious lesions, reduces the risk of transmission to humans.

If left untreated, the lesions can expand and become superinfected with bacteria, making the skin more painful.
In weakened animals, the infection can become chronic and difficult to completely eliminate.

In humans, it appears as red, rounded, itchy patches on the skin. It is recommended to consult a doctor in the event of suspicious skin lesions after contact with a guinea pig, and to report this contact.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good when the disease is treated early, with complete recovery after appropriate treatment and rigorous cleaning of the environment.
