Sarcoptic mange is a skin disease caused by a tiny parasitic mite, Sarcoptes scabiei. This mite burrows into the coati's skin, causing severe itching and skin lesions. It affects many mammals, both wild and domestic, and can spread between species. In coatis, it can occur in animals living in zoos, in the wild, and in captive populations in Tunisia.

The most striking sign is intense and repeated scratching. The coati licks, bites, and rubs itself against objects to relieve the itching.
The skin becomes red, then thickens and develops wrinkles, particularly on hairless areas such as the ears, muzzle, paws, and tail base.
Grayish or yellowish crusts appear and fur falls out in patches, leaving bare areas.
Over time, the skin can become dark and crack. The animal loses weight, loses appetite, and becomes lethargic, especially if the infestation is long-standing or widespread.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by a microscopic mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows into the superficial layers of the skin to lay its eggs. This burrowing activity and the parasite's droppings trigger an intense allergic and inflammatory reaction in the host, responsible for the itching and skin lesions.
Coatis living in dense groups, overcrowded captive conditions, or in contact with dogs or other wild carnivores carrying the mite are at higher risk. A weakened immune system from stress, concurrent illness, or poor nutrition increases the likelihood of more severe and widespread infestation. Young animals and already weakened individuals often develop more serious forms of the disease.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through prolonged direct contact between an infested animal and a healthy one. It can also occur indirectly via an environment, bedding, or recently contaminated materials, as the mite can survive a few days away from its host. Contact with other wild carnivores or stray dogs carrying mange is a frequent source of infection for coatis living in the wild or semi-wild conditions.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian examines the skin and lesions, and confirms diagnosis through a skin scraping examined under a microscope, which allows identification of the mite, its eggs, or its droppings. In some cases, a skin biopsy may be necessary if scrapings remain negative despite signs suggestive of the condition.
Treatment
Treatment relies on external or systemic antiparasitic medications prescribed and tailored by the veterinarian to the species and the animal's condition. Skin care, such as soothing shampoos, may complement the treatment. Antibiotic treatment may be added if secondary bacterial infection of the lesions occurs.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies on good hygiene of enclosures and equipment, as well as limiting contact with stray animals or animals of unknown origin. Any new animal introduced to a group should be observed and examined before being placed with others. Regular antiparasitic treatment, following veterinary advice, helps reduce the risk of infestation in facilities housing multiple animals.
Possible complications
Scratched skin lesions can become infected with bacteria, worsening inflammation and delaying healing. Severe and prolonged infestation leads to general exhaustion, dehydration, and significant weight loss, potentially threatening the animal's survival, especially if the animal is young or already weakened.

Transmission to humans
Sarcoptes scabiei can occasionally spread to humans through direct contact with an infested animal, causing itching and small, temporary skin lesions. In humans, infestation from an animal usually remains limited and heals spontaneously once contact with the animal source is removed, though medical advice is recommended if you are unsure.
Prognosis
The prognosis is good if treatment is started early and followed correctly, with recovery occurring within several weeks. Without treatment, the disease can progressively worsen and lead to severe weakness, or even death in advanced cases, particularly in wild animals already in poor health.

Can sarcoptic mange in coatis be transmitted to my dog or cat?

Can a coati with mange heal completely?
