The disease affects both wild raccoons and those held in captivity, shelters, or wildlife rehabilitation centres.

Causes and risk factors
Sarcoptic mange is caused by a microscopic mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, that burrows into the thickness of the skin. This mite triggers intense inflammation and very strong itching.
Transmission occurs through direct contact between animals, particularly during social contact, mating, or between a mother and her young. Indirect transmission is possible via a burrow, bedding, or an environment contaminated with recently shed mites, as the parasite can survive several days away from its host under favourable conditions.
Young raccoons, animals weakened by another disease or malnutrition, and populations living at high density are at higher risk. Close quarters in shared burrows and breeding season increase contact favouring transmission.

Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through direct skin-to-skin contact between an infested animal and a healthy animal. Indirect transmission is also possible via a contaminated environment (burrow, bedding) where the mite can survive temporarily away from its host.
The disease can also be transmitted to other species, including dogs and foxes, and may accidentally infect humans.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is difficult in a wild animal living free. It is based on visual observation: a thin raccoon with large hairless areas and crusty, thickened skin, especially around the face and limbs, is highly suspect.
In a captive animal, at a wildlife care centre, or in a shelter, the veterinarian confirms diagnosis by skin scraping examined under a microscope, which allows the mites or their eggs to be seen.
Skin biopsy may be performed if there is doubt.
Treatment
The standard treatment relies on antiparasitic agents specifically able to eliminate the mite, given only under veterinary supervision.
Supportive care is often necessary in advanced cases: skin care, management of dehydration, and antibiotics if secondary bacterial infection of skin lesions develops.
