Vibrio infection is a bacterial disease affecting jellyfish kept in aquariums or tanks, and is rarely seen in the wild. It is caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio, which are normally present in seawater but become pathogenic when the animal is weakened or its environment deteriorates. This infection affects the gelatinous tissues characteristic of jellyfish and can progress rapidly toward partial or complete disintegration of the animal. It is well known to public aquariums and specialized jellyfish breeders, as these animals are particularly sensitive to environmental changes.

Early signs are often subtle: less fluid swimming movements, irregular or slowed bell contractions. Whitish spots, opaque patches, or discoloration may appear on the bell or tentacles. As the disease progresses, tissues become flaccid, tear easily, and pieces of tentacles or bell may detach. In advanced cases, the animal may partially disintegrate in the water, a phenomenon sometimes called 'melting' by breeders.

Causes and risk factors

The infection is caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio, naturally present in seawater, including in well-maintained aquariums. These bacteria become pathogenic especially when the jellyfish is weakened, stressed, or injured: poor water quality, unsuitable temperature, unstable salinity, or rough handling promote their multiplication. Once established, they attack the soft and gelatinous tissues of the animal, causing progressive degradation of its structure.

Captive jellyfish face the highest risk, particularly when water quality is not properly maintained.

Stress from transport, handling, or unsuitable tank mates weakens the animal's defences.

Water that is too warm, fluctuating salinity, or excess organic matter in the tank promote the growth of Vibrio bacteria.

Jellyfish that are already injured—for example, from contact with a pump or tank wall—are more vulnerable to infection.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly through contaminated water, particularly in a closed-loop system where bacterial load can accumulate. A weakened or injured jellyfish is more susceptible to colonization by bacteria already present in its environment. Contact with material or water from an already affected tank can also spread the infection.

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Management begins with immediate improvement of water parameters: temperature, salinity, filtration, and reduction of organic matter.

In some cases, antibiotic therapy appropriate for seawater may be considered, but only under the supervision of a specialist in marine invertebrates.

Isolating the sick animal in a quarantine tank limits spread to other individuals.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention depends above all on maintaining excellent water quality: appropriate filtration, regular monitoring of temperature, salinity, and ammonia levels.

Stress must be avoided during handling, tank transfers, or sudden changes in water parameters.

Quarantining new jellyfish before adding them to a shared tank limits the risk of cross-contamination.

Regular cleaning of equipment and avoiding overcrowding also reduce overall bacterial pressure.

Tissue breakdown can progress rapidly, leading to loss of large sections of the bell or tentacles.

Once the infection is established, it can cause the animal's death within days.

In an aquarium or tank, the infection can spread to other jellyfish or invertebrates in the same body of water.

The jellyfish develops whitish patches or unusual cloudiness on the bell or tentacles.

Tissue pieces are detaching or the animal appears to be partially disintegrating.

Swimming becomes very irregular or the animal remains still at the bottom of the tank.

Transmission to humans

Some Vibrio species can cause infections in humans, mainly through contact between a skin wound and contaminated water. The risk remains limited with normal handling, but caution is recommended for people with open wounds or a weakened immune system.

Prognosis

Prognosis depends greatly on how quickly the infection is detected and water parameters are corrected.

When caught early, with immediate improvement in husbandry conditions, the outcome can be favourable.

However, once tissue disintegration is well underway, the prognosis becomes poor and the animal's survival is at risk.

Can a sick jellyfish contaminate the fish in the same tank?

Vibrio bacteria primarily affect the delicate tissues of jellyfish and other invertebrates. Fish are generally less susceptible, but a poorly maintained aquarium promotes multiple health problems at once, so vigilance remains necessary.

Can you treat an infected jellyfish with a self-purchased antibiotic?

No. The use of antibiotics must be supervised by a specialist in marine invertebrate aquariums, because incorrect dosing or the wrong product can kill the animal even faster than an untreated infection.
