Bacteria of the Vibrio genus, naturally present in seawater, become pathogenic when the sponge is weakened. They attack the tissues and cause progressive destruction. This disease is well documented in farmed sponges, particularly those used for commercial natural sponge production.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by bacteria of the Vibrio genus, microorganisms widespread in marine environments. These bacteria are opportunistic—they normally live without causing harm, but take advantage of a weakened sponge to multiply and invade the tissues.

High water temperature promotes Vibrio multiplication and weakens the sponge's natural defenses.

Poor water quality, high stocking density, stress from handling or transport, and mechanical injuries to sponge tissue also increase infection risk.

Pollution events or sudden changes in salinity can likewise compromise the health of colonies.

Transmission

Transmission occurs through contaminated water, particularly between individuals in close proximity in the same farming tank or dense marine area.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Treatment

There is no standardized individual treatment for sponges as there is for other animals. Management aims primarily to correct environmental conditions (temperature, water quality) and isolate affected individuals. In certain farming contexts, baths with marine antiseptics or antibacterial agents may be considered under specialized supervision.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention relies mainly on maintaining good water quality and stable temperature, avoiding heat spikes.

It is advisable to keep sponge stocking density low in farming settings, handle colonies carefully to prevent injury, and monitor tissue appearance regularly to detect any abnormalities early.

Quick isolation of affected individuals can limit spread to neighbouring colonies.

Possible complications

Without intervention on environmental causes, the infection can spread throughout the tissue and cause complete death of the sponge. In farming settings, it can spread rapidly to other colonies in the same tank or marine area.
