In this animal, a bacterial skin infection affects the mantle—the thin layer of living tissue that lines the inside of the shell and comes into direct contact with the water.

This disease is mainly documented in conch hatchery operations, where crowding and poor water quality promote the growth of opportunistic bacteria, particularly Vibrio species.
