The most visible signs are redness, localized swelling, and crusting of the skin, often on the legs, wings, or neck. A wound that does not heal, sometimes weeping or foul-smelling, may develop. The bird may excessively preen or pick at the affected area. In more advanced cases, general lethargy, loss of appetite, dull plumage, and sometimes fever are observed. The egret may become less alert, less mobile, and stay apart from the group.

Causes and risk factors
The infection is caused by bacteria naturally present in the environment or on the bird's skin, which become pathogenic when the skin barrier is broken. The germs most often responsible in waterfowl are staphylococci, streptococci, or Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli or Pseudomonas, particularly in the presence of stagnant or polluted water.
Wounds (scratches, cuts, bites from other animals, capture injuries, or abrasion injuries), external parasites causing lesions from scratching, an immune system weakened by stress, malnutrition, or concurrent disease, and a damp, dirty, or overcrowded environment favor the onset of these infections. Birds in rehabilitation centers or prolonged captivity are particularly at risk.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian will examine the skin and assess the extent of the lesions. A sample may be taken from the affected area to identify the bacteria through bacterial culture and determine which treatments the bacteria responds to. A general health assessment of the bird—including weight, hydration status, and behavior—completes the examination to evaluate the severity of the condition.
Treatment
Treatment is based on antibiotics matched to the identified bacteria, combined with local wound care including cleaning and disinfection. Anti-inflammatory or pain relief medication may be recommended if the bird shows signs of pain or significant swelling. Nutritional support and rehydration are sometimes necessary for weakened birds.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Good environmental hygiene should be maintained, including clean water and clean resting surfaces. Any wound should be cleaned promptly and monitored. Handling of birds should be minimal and done with gentle movements to avoid capture injuries. Appropriate diet and a low-stress habitat strengthen the bird's natural defenses.
Possible complications
Without treatment, the infection can spread deeper into the tissues beneath the skin or become generalized throughout the body (septicemia), which can be life-threatening. Abnormal scarring can also result in functional impairment, particularly if the lesion affects a wing or leg.

Prognosis
The outlook is generally good if the infection is treated early and remains localized. It becomes more guarded if the infection spreads deeper, leads to septicemia, or treatment is delayed, especially in an already weakened bird.
