Bacterial skin infection in brittle stars is a disease affecting the integument—the outer covering of this small marine animal related to starfish. Opportunistic bacteria invade the body surface or arms, causing lesions and sometimes local tissue destruction. This disease is mainly seen in aquarium settings, affecting weakened animals or those living in poor water quality. It can affect a single individual or multiple animals in the same tank if conditions promote bacterial growth.

Early signs are often subtle: a discolored, whitish, or blackened area appears on the central disc or on an arm.

This area may progress to an open wound, with tissue loss, a sunken or tattered appearance.

The affected animal moves less, hides more, and may shed one or more arms through autotomy (the animal detaches itself from the diseased part).

In advanced cases, the brittle star becomes sluggish, does not respond normally to stimulation, and may stop feeding.

Causes and risk factors

Various opportunistic marine bacteria (notably genera such as Vibrio) take advantage of weakness in the animal or an existing wound to colonize the integument. These bacteria occur naturally in seawater and become pathogenic only when the balance between the host and its environment is disrupted.

Poor water quality (elevated ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate levels), unsuitable temperature, stress from transport or cohabitation, mechanical injury, or general weakness in the animal promote disease development. Brittle stars recently introduced to an aquarium and still acclimating are particularly vulnerable.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Diagnosis relies on direct observation of skin lesions by a professional experienced with marine animals, combined with water quality analysis. In some cases, a sample from the affected area may be sent to a specialized laboratory for bacterial identification.

Treatment

Management focuses first on correcting water parameters and isolating the sick animal. Antiseptic or antibacterial baths specific to marine invertebrates may be used under professional supervision. Broad-spectrum antibiotics are sometimes considered in severe cases, always overseen by a specialist given the particular sensitivity of invertebrates to certain treatments.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Maintaining stable water quality suited to the species is the best prevention: regular monitoring of water parameters, frequent water changes, and effective filtration.

Avoid overstocking and stress during handling.

Quarantine new animals before introducing them to the main tank.

Remove any injured or weakened animal promptly to prevent spread.

Possible complications

Without treatment, the infection can progress and lead to loss of several arms, necrosis spreading to the central disk, or death of the animal. An untreated infection can also contaminate other invertebrates in the same tank.
