Bacterial skin infection in sea urchins, also called bald sea urchin disease, affects the outer skin covering the animal's hard shell. Opportunistic bacteria attack this envelope and gradually destroy the tissues surrounding the spines. The spines eventually fall off, leaving bare white patches on the shell. This disease is well documented in both farmed and wild sea urchins, particularly during periods of stress or water pollution.

The first visible sign is discolouration of the skin around certain spines, taking on a whitish or greyish tone.

High density of animals in tanks or farming systems increases the risk of transmission.
Poor water quality—excessive temperature, low oxygen levels, or accumulation of organic matter—promotes bacterial growth.
Mechanical injuries, rough handling, or stressful transport weaken the skin and create openings for bacteria.
Abrupt changes in temperature or salinity, as well as coastal pollution, are also contributing factors.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
