Bacterial skin infection in frilled sharks is a condition of the skin caused by the overgrowth of bacteria, most often opportunistic organisms, that takes advantage of a wound, irritation, or general weakening of the animal. The frilled shark (Chlamydoselachus anguineus) is a species of primitive shark living in deep ocean waters, rarely observed alive and exceptionally kept in captivity. As a result, veterinary information on this condition remains limited and comes mainly from isolated cases reported by aquariums and marine research institutes, as well as by comparison with other deep-sea shark species or aquarium sharks.

Observable signs include areas of red, irritated, or discolored skin, sometimes accompanied by small wounds that do not heal or by weeping lesions. The skin may appear locally damaged or show an abnormal appearance compared to the rest of the body. The affected animal may appear more lethargic than usual, less responsive, and may show abnormal or slowed swimming. An unusual odor may sometimes be present in the affected area.

Causes and risk factors
Bacterial skin infections most often occur following a skin injury (rubbing against a tank wall, injury during capture or transport, bite wound). Opportunistic bacteria naturally present in seawater or on the fish's skin, such as certain species of Vibrio, Aeromonas, or Pseudomonas, take advantage of this skin breach to multiply. Stress related to captivity, which is very poorly tolerated by this deep-sea species, weakens the skin's natural defenses and promotes infection.
Captivity is the primary risk factor, as this species is extremely sensitive to variations in pressure, temperature, and light compared with its natural deep-sea habitat. Capture and transport stress, handling, poor water quality, and any skin wound or abrasion can promote bacterial infection.
Transmission
Transmission is not between individuals in the classical sense; rather, this is an opportunistic infection by bacteria already present in the marine environment that develop locally when taking advantage of a skin wound or weakening of the animal.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is challenging in routine practice because the frilled shark is a deep-sea species very rarely kept in captivity, seen mostly during accidental catches or scientific studies. A veterinarian specializing in exotic or aquatic animals examines the skin appearance and, if possible, takes skin samples (swabs, biopsies) for bacterial and cytological analysis to identify the causative organisms. The animal's general condition, water quality, and environmental parameters are also assessed, as they greatly influence the development of these infections.
Treatment
Management involves local skin care, strict improvement of water quality, and, if the animal's condition permits, antibiotics suited to the identified marine bacteria, given under specialized veterinary supervision. Supportive care (stress reduction, monitoring of general condition) accompanies treatment throughout.

Prevention
Prevention depends mainly on limiting stress, a major cause of immunosuppression in this species, which is highly sensitive to captive conditions. Excellent water quality, stable physicochemical parameters matching its natural habitat (great depth, low temperature, darkness), and minimal handling reduce the risk of skin injury and thus secondary infection. In practice, the best prevention is not to keep this species in captivity, as it is physiologically unsuited to any environment other than the deep ocean.
