Bacterial infection in clams comprises several diseases caused by bacteria, most commonly of the genus Vibrio. It primarily affects young clams and cultured clams in ponds or in salt marshes, particularly when water quality is poor. This infection can cause rapid and widespread mortality in a batch or farming pond.

It is well known among shellfish farmers because it represents a frequent cause of economic losses on shellfish farms, including in Tunisia where shellfish farming is developing.

Affected clams often show visible general weakness: they burrow less effectively into the sediment, their filter-feeding activity decreases, and they may rise abnormally to the surface of the pond.

Sometimes delayed valve closure is observed, with the shell remaining slightly open even without stimulation, or the flesh appearing discolored and soft when opened.

In advanced cases, rapid and massive mortality of the batch is the most characteristic sign, sometimes occurring within just a few days.

The disease is caused by bacteria, mainly Vibrio species (such as Vibrio splendidus, Vibrio tapetis, or related species), which take advantage of weakening in the animal or poor water quality to multiply and invade tissues.

These bacteria are naturally present in the marine environment; they become pathogenic especially when farming conditions are degraded (stress, high stocking density, elevated temperature, poor oxygenation).

The main risk factors are elevated water temperature, poor water quality (excess organic matter, insufficient water exchange), high stocking density, stress from handling or transport, and prior weakening of the animal from another cause (parasite, pollution, sudden change in salinity).

Young clams (spat) are generally more susceptible than adults.

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Good facility hygiene and regular health inspections by a veterinarian or shellfish aquaculture specialist allow early detection of warning signs.

Possible complications

The main complications are mass mortality of the batch, spread of infection to other neighbouring ponds or farms, and significant economic losses for the operator.

Unusual or sudden mortality observed in a clam batch. Clams that remain open or no longer respond to stimulation. General decline in activity or filtration of the batch. Any concern about water quality associated with signs of herd weakness.

Prognosis

The prognosis varies depending on how quickly the condition is detected and the severity of the infection. Early intervention on water quality and isolation of affected batches can limit losses, but an advanced bacterial infection can cause high mortality in a short time.
