Chytridiomycosis is a serious fungal disease that affects amphibians, including the golden poison dart frog (Phyllobates terribilis), a venomous frog native to Colombia that is highly prized in the terrarium hobby.
It is caused by a microscopic fungus called Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, often abbreviated as Bd. This fungus attacks the skin of amphibians, a vital organ in these animals because they breathe and absorb water through it.
This disease is regarded by international animal health organizations as one of the major causes of amphibian population decline worldwide. In captivity, it poses a serious risk to poison dart frog collections like those of Phyllobates species.

Thickening or unusual discoloration of the skin may be seen, sometimes with a dull appearance or slight peeling.
The animal becomes lethargic, remaining still more than usual, and loses appetite.
Some individuals adopt an abnormal posture, such as hind legs spread apart or held against the body in an unusual way.
In advanced cases, loss of the righting reflex may be noted (the animal struggles to right itself) along with general weakness.
In the golden poison dart frog, the disease can progress rapidly and lead to death with no highly specific signs, which makes early detection difficult.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), an aquatic chytrid that colonizes the keratin in amphibian skin.
This fungus disrupts water and electrolyte exchange through the skin, which can lead to a severe imbalance in the body.
Poison dart frogs, like many dendrobatids, are susceptible to this infection in captivity, particularly when stressed or kept in unsuitable conditions.
A terrarium temperature that is too low or unstable promotes fungal growth, which develops best in cool water.
Poor terrarium hygiene, overcrowding, or failure to quarantine new arrivals increase the risk.
Stress from transport or a change in environment can also weaken the skin's natural defenses.
Transmission
The fungus spreads through direct contact between animals, but also indirectly through contaminated water, substrate, or contaminated terrarium equipment (net, décor, caretaker's hands).
Zoospores, the motile infectious form of the fungus, swim in water and can survive for some time outside a host.
Introduction of a new animal or unquarantined plants/décor is a common way the infection enters a collection.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on a painless skin swab obtained with a special swab, which is then analyzed in the laboratory using molecular biology testing (PCR) to detect the fungal DNA.
The veterinarian may also directly observe a skin sample under the microscope in some cases, although PCR is the reference method.
Since clinical signs are nonspecific, laboratory testing alone can confirm the disease with certainty.
Treatment
Treatment relies on antifungal baths prescribed and dosed by the veterinarian, along with adjustment of the environmental temperature, since the fungus does not tolerate heat well.
In some cases, local antifungal treatment is used, always under veterinary oversight because amphibians are very sensitive to chemicals applied to their skin.
General support (rehydration, stress management, isolation of affected animals) is part of overall care.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Strict quarantine of any new animal before introduction to an existing collection is the most important measure.
Screening by a veterinarian specializing in amphibians may be recommended before introducing a new individual.
Equipment (nets, décor, substrates) should be disinfected or dedicated to each terrarium to prevent cross-contamination.
Maintaining a stable temperature suited to the species, along with good water and substrate hygiene, helps minimize risk.
Avoiding contact with water or materials from the wild or of unknown origin is also recommended.
Possible complications
Without treatment, the infection can lead to severe electrolyte imbalance, failure of vital skin functions, and then death of the animal.
The disease can also spread rapidly throughout a terrarium or collection if no isolation measures are taken.

The animal becomes unusually lethargic or refuses food for several days in a row.
The skin shows abnormal appearance: thickening, discoloration, or unusual shedding.
The animal adopts an abnormal posture in the limbs or has difficulty righting itself.
A new animal has just been introduced to the collection and you want preventive screening.
Several animals in the same terrarium show similar signs at the same time.
Prognosis
The prognosis depends heavily on how early the condition is diagnosed. Detected early, chytridiomycosis can be treated with a reasonable success rate in captive amphibians.
If diagnosed late, the prognosis becomes guarded to poor, as skin damage may already be severe and irreversible.

Can chytrid be transmitted to humans or other domestic animals?
No, this fungus is specific to amphibians. It poses no known risk to humans, dogs, cats, or other pets.
