This parasite establishes itself beneath the seahorse's skin surface and forms small cysts that appear as tiny white spots, resembling salt sprinkled across the body.

This disease particularly affects seahorses in aquaria, a closed environment where the parasite can multiply rapidly and infest all the tank's inhabitants. The spotted seahorse, due to its delicate skin and relatively sedentary lifestyle, is especially susceptible.

Without prompt treatment, infestation can become severe and life-threatening to the animal, particularly when the gills are affected.

The disease is caused by a ciliated protozoal parasite, Cryptocaryon irritans, specific to marine environments. This parasite has a multi-stage life cycle: a mature form detaches from the seahorse, sinks to the bottom of the aquarium, forms a cyst, and divides into numerous tiny infective cells that then seek out a new host to colonize.

This rapid cycle explains why infestation can explode within days in a closed aquarium if left untreated.

Several factors promote the appearance or worsening of the disease: introducing a new animal or equipment without quarantine, stress from poor water quality, temperature or salinity fluctuations, overcrowding in the tank, and an immune system weakened by other diseases or malnutrition.

Newly set up aquariums, where biological balance is not yet stable, are also at higher risk.

Transmission

The parasite spreads directly through the aquarium water from an infested animal to other inhabitants, via the infective forms released after the parasite divides at the tank bottom. It does not transmit to humans.

Prevention

Prevention primarily relies on systematic quarantine of any new seahorse or fish before introduction into the main tank, lasting several weeks.

Strict and regular monitoring of water parameters (temperature, salinity, filtration quality) reduces stress in the animals and thus their susceptibility to parasites.

Avoiding overcrowding, disinfecting equipment shared between tanks, and observing the animals daily to detect any early signs are also useful measures.
