Ich's disease is a parasitic infestation affecting many fish and aquatic amphibians, including mudskippers (also called mudhopper or frogfish). It is caused by a small single-celled parasite that lodges in the skin and gills. In mudskippers, semi-terrestrial animals living between water and air in mangrove swamps, the disease primarily affects the skin exposed to water or kept moist in captivity. It appears mainly in aquariums or paludariums where the water is stressful, poorly filtered, or too cold.

Small white dots, resembling grains of salt, are scattered over the skin, fins, or body of the animal.
The mudskipper may rub itself against decorations or substrate, as if trying to scratch.
It often becomes less active, stays hidden, stops hopping or moving normally at the water surface or across the mud as is its habit.
Appetite decreases, the animal loses weight, and its skin may look irritated or duller than usual.
In advanced cases, skin and gill respiration become impaired, worsening the animal's overall condition.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by a ciliated protozoan parasite that becomes encysted in the skin. It burrows into a small pocket where it multiplies, forming the visible white dots. Once mature, the parasite leaves the skin, falls into the water, divides into many infective cells that seek a new host. This cycle depends heavily on temperature and water quality.
Stress is the main triggering factor: recent transport, sudden temperature change, poor water quality, lack of space or dry land areas for the mudskipper, unsuitable tankmates. Water that is too cold slows the animal's immune response while the parasite continues its cycle. A recently set-up aquarium or paludarium without a maturation period also increases risk.
Transmission
The parasite is transmitted through contaminated water, shared aquarium equipment, or the introduction of a new animal or plants not quarantined. It does not spread from one animal to another through direct contact outside water.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
A veterinarian specializing in exotic or aquatic animals examines the animal and observes the white spots with the naked eye or a magnifying glass. A light skin scraping, examined under a microscope, confirms the presence of the parasite and rules out other causes of skin lesions.
Treatment
Treatment relies on specific antiparasitic products adapted for fish and amphibious animals, to be used only on the advice of a veterinarian or specialist, as mudskippers are sensitive to certain standard aquarium treatments. Improving water quality and gradually adjusting temperature always accompany medication treatment.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Maintaining stable water temperature and quality, with effective filtration, is the best prevention.
Any new plant or animal should be quarantined for a period before being added to the main tank.
Avoid sudden temperature changes and reduce stress during transport or when cleaning the vivarium.
Providing enough emerged areas, mud substrate, and hiding places allows the mudskipper to live in conditions close to its natural environment, which strengthens its natural defenses.
Possible complications
Without treatment, skin lesions can spread, promote secondary bacterial infections, and severely disrupt cutaneous respiration, which is essential in this species. Severe cases can lead to death of the animal.

Prognosis
