Nosematosis is a parasitic disease caused by microsporidia, microscopic organisms closely related to single-celled fungi. In ants, this disease mainly affects the intestines of worker ants and sometimes the queen, disrupting digestion and nutrient absorption. Though much better documented in the honeybee, nosematosis has also been identified in several ant species, particularly in colonies reared in captivity (ant farms, terrarium keeping) where high density and stress promote its spread. It causes progressive weakening of affected individuals and can, in severe cases, threaten the survival of the entire colony.

Infected ants show progressive weakening: slowed movement, apparent loss of appetite, and reduced overall activity within the nest. Abnormally high mortality may be observed in the colony, sometimes accompanied by a decrease in egg-laying if the queen is affected. Infected workers may isolate themselves or wander disorganized and away from the group, a behaviour sometimes seen in sick social insects. The abdomen of some individuals may appear distended due to intestinal damage, though this sign is difficult to observe without magnification.

Causes and risk factors

Nosematosis is caused by microsporidia, unicellular parasitic organisms once classified among fungi. In social insects, the most documented genera are Nosema and Vairimorpha, well known in the honeybee. In ants, related microsporidia have been described in several species, chiefly colonizing the cells of the midgut. The parasite multiplies inside the digestive cells of the insect, disrupting nutrient absorption and progressively weakening the infected individual.

Colonies kept in captivity under conditions of high density, excessive humidity, or poor hygiene face increased risk. Stress from temperature fluctuations, food shortage, or frequent handling can weaken the natural defenses of ants and make parasite establishment easier. Introducing new ants or uncontrolled food sources into an existing colony represents an important contamination risk factor.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly through the fecal-oral route: spores from the parasite, present in the droppings of infected individuals, contaminate food, water, or nest surfaces. Ants become infected by cleaning the nest, consuming contaminated food, or through trophallaxis (regurgitated food exchange between individuals), a common practice in colonies. Spores can also persist for a time in the nest environment, making delayed contamination possible.

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Diagnosis of nosemosis in ants is not a common practice in standard veterinary medicine. It relies mainly on careful observation of the colony by its keeper: gradual decline despite adequate conditions, abnormal mortality, widespread lethargy. Certain confirmation would require microscopic examination of intestinal tissues to detect parasite spores, an examination available in some specialized laboratories in insect parasitology or apiculture, but rarely accessible to an amateur myrmecologist in Tunisia. In practice, diagnosis often remains presumptive, based on ruling out other causes (food shortage, unsuitable temperature, fungal infection such as Cordyceps, stress).

Treatment

There is no specific validated antiparasitic treatment for nosemosis in ants. Management relies mainly on supportive measures: improving nest hygiene and humidity conditions, enhancing nutritional intake to support weakened individuals, and isolating the affected colony to prevent contamination of other colonies. In some research contexts, antifungal or antiparasitic treatments have been tested in other social insects such as honeybees, but their use in ants remains experimental and non-standardized.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention relies first and foremost on strict hygiene in the colony: regular cleaning of living and feeding spaces, prompt removal of dead ants, proper management of food waste and excess moisture. It is recommended to quarantine any new colony or individual from outside before introducing it into an existing colony. Avoiding overcrowding and water or temperature stress also helps limit colony vulnerability. Rearing equipment (test tubes, foraging containers) should be disinfected between each use for different colonies.

Possible complications

Uncontrolled infestation can lead to gradual collapse of the entire colony, especially if the queen or queens are affected, since their weakening compromises population renewal. The colony also becomes more vulnerable to other pathogens or opportunistic parasites due to general weakening of the immune system in infected individuals.

Prognosis

A mature, large colony can sometimes compensate for losses if breeding conditions are quickly improved, but the infection tends to persist chronically within the nest once established.
