This is a frequent occurrence in the wild and is a normal part of the ecology of these mollusks. Some of these nematodes are harmless to the slug itself, others can affect its health, and some are chiefly important because the slug serves as a pathway to another animal, particularly a domestic or wild mammal.

In slugs, signs are subtle and nonspecific: slowed movement, reduced appetite, and stunted growth in young individuals. In many cases, no visible symptoms are present, and the slug appears to be in perfect health while harboring worms in its digestive tract.

Causes and risk factors
Slugs can host various nematodes (roundworms) that live in their digestive tract or in other tissues. These worms belong to several families, some serving as mere intermediate or paratenic hosts for parasites that will later infest a mammal or bird, while others develop directly within the slug itself. Infection occurs through ingestion of eggs or larvae present in vegetation, moist soil, or feces from other animals.
Living in a damp, vegetation-rich environment; cohabiting with wildlife (birds, hedgehogs, rodents) carrying roundworms; high slug population density in a garden or farm; and the presence of droppings from infested animals in the slug's living area.
Transmission
A slug becomes infected by ingesting nematode eggs or larvae present in soil, vegetation, or feces from infested animals. It can then transmit certain parasites to a predator (bird, hedgehog, dog, or cat) that consumes it, with that predator becoming the definitive host in which the adult worm will develop.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
There are no veterinarians specialising in malacology (the study of molluscs) for this type of individual care. Monitoring is carried out by a naturalist, amateur keeper, or researcher who watches the activity, appetite, and appearance of slugs in captive breeding or terrarium settings. Precise identification of roundworms (nematodes) requires microscopic examination of faeces or tissues, performed in a parasitology laboratory.
Treatment
There is no practical or validated antiparasitic treatment for wild or amateur-bred slugs. Management mainly concerns a domestic animal that may have become infected by eating a parasitised slug: in this case, the veterinarian can prescribe an appropriate antiparasitic drug following diagnosis.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
There is no prevention that can be applied to wild slug populations. For owners of domestic animals (dogs, cats, poultry), prevention involves preventing the animal from eating slugs or snails, limiting access to damp areas infested with molluscs, and following a worming programme recommended by a veterinarian. In amateur slug keeping (terrarium care), good tank hygiene, clean water, and uncontaminated food reduce the risks.
Possible complications
Massive infestation can slow the slug's growth, reduce its activity, and lower its reproductive capacity. In certain slug species that act as intermediate hosts, no signs appear in the slug itself, but the risk is transferred to the animal that eats it later (bird, hedgehog, dog...).
When to see a veterinarian
A dog or cat has been seen eating a slug or snail and subsequently shows digestive upset, coughing, or lethargy.
A domestic animal displays unexplained neurological signs after visiting a garden infested with slugs.
A captive-bred slug (terrarium) shows marked slowness, stops eating, or has persistent growth delay.
Uncertainty about the safety for human consumption of snails or slugs.
Transmission to humans
Some nematodes that pass through slugs, such as rat lungworms or larvae of worms that can affect carnivores, are not transmitted directly to humans by simple contact. The risk exists mainly if raw or undercooked snails or slugs are consumed, a practice that should be avoided entirely.
Prognosis
For the slug itself, the prognosis is generally favorable in cases of light parasite burden, with no visible consequences. Heavy infestation can weaken the animal but rarely kills it directly. The main concern is the risk of transmission to a definitive host (mammal, bird), where the prognosis will depend on that host and its veterinary management.

Can a slug in my garden make my dog sick?
Yes, potentially. Some slugs harbour parasitic worm larvae that can infest a dog if it swallows them, particularly while playing or eating grass. It is recommended to prevent a dog from eating slugs or snails and to keep it up to date with deworming treatments, in consultation with your veterinarian.
How to tell if a slug is parasitized?
With the naked eye, it is very difficult if not impossible. Only laboratory analysis, with microscopic examination of the digestive tract or tissues, makes it possible to detect the presence of roundworms.
Do slugs in my garden need treatment for worms?
No, that is neither possible nor practical. The parasitism of wild slugs is part of the natural balance. Vigilance should instead focus on domestic animals that might consume them.
Is this parasitism dangerous for humans?
The direct risk to humans is very low, but it exists indirectly if one consumes raw or undercooked slugs or snails, or through contact with contaminated mucus without washing hands. It is better to avoid any prolonged direct contact and to wash hands after handling.
