These parasites develop within the insect's digestive tract and can cause anything from a simple digestive upset to a fatal outcome when the parasite must exit the host's body to complete its life cycle, depending on the parasite type.

This condition affects both wild praying mantises and those kept in captivity, particularly when their diet consists of prey captured outdoors.

Signs are often subtle at first. The mantis may eat less or refuse prey, become slower and less responsive, and show an abnormally swollen or conversely thin abdomen depending on the parasite type involved.

In the case of horsehair worm infestation, the most characteristic sign—and often the only visible one—is the sudden emergence of a long, thin, dark worm resembling a hair or thread, exiting the mantis's body through the rear of the abdomen, typically triggered by contact with water. This event is almost always fatal for the insect.

With gregarine parasitism, symptoms are vaguer: soft or abnormal droppings, reduced activity, slowed growth in young individuals (nymphs), and sometimes progressive die-off in a captive population.

Causes and risk factors

Horsehair worms (Nematomorpha) are parasites whose larvae, present in water or on moist vegetation, are accidentally ingested by the mantis when it consumes a contaminated prey item (such as a cricket or grasshopper that has itself ingested the larva). The worm then develops inside the insect's body cavity, feeding on its reserves, before emerging as an adult to reach a water source and reproduce.

Gregarines are single-celled protozoans that colonize the mantis's intestine. Infection occurs through ingestion of cysts present on infected prey, contaminated substrate, or poorly cleaned rearing equipment.

The main risk factor is feeding a praying mantis with insects caught in the wild rather than captive-bred ones, since wild prey can harbour Gordian worm larvae or gregarine cysts.

Poor terrarium maintenance, damp substrate not regularly replaced, and equipment shared among several insects without cleaning also increase the risk of gregarine transmission.

Young nymphs are more fragile and generally more vulnerable to the effects of digestive parasitism than adults.

Transmission

Transmission occurs through ingestion of contaminated prey (containing horsehair worm larvae or gregarine cysts) or contact with contaminated substrate or rearing equipment.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

There is no routine diagnostic test readily available to owners for this type of parasitism. A veterinarian specializing in exotic animals can examine the insect, its behaviour, and sometimes analyse faeces or digestive contents if the insect has died, to identify parasite eggs, cysts, or fragments under the microscope.

In the case of a Gordian worm, direct observation of its emergence is itself the main diagnostic indicator, but unfortunately this occurs when the outcome is already fatal for the mantis.

Treatment

There is no validated specific treatment to eliminate a Gordian worm already established in a praying mantis; once the parasite reaches maturity, the outcome is almost always fatal.

For gregarines, some specialized breeders use supportive measures (enhanced hygiene, improved diet) in consultation with a veterinarian or invertebrate specialist, but medical options remain very limited in insects.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Feeding the mantis exclusively with prey raised in captivity in a controlled environment, without exposure to stagnant water or outdoor soil, substantially reduces the risk of Gordian worms.

Regular terrarium cleaning, substrate replacement, and disinfection of breeding equipment between each use limit gregarine spread.

It is also recommended to isolate any new individual or any prey of uncertain origin before introducing it to an established colony.

Possible complications

Infestation by a Gordian worm almost inevitably leads to the mantis's death during parasite emergence, due to the internal damage caused to the insect's body.

Uncontrolled gregarine parasitism can progressively weaken the insect, slow the growth of the insect or its nymphs, and favour other opportunistic diseases in a colony.

When to see a veterinarian

The praying mantis refuses to eat for several days with no apparent reason.

The abdomen appears unusually swollen, deformed, or conversely very thin.

A dark threadlike worm emerges from the insect's body.

Several individuals in the same colony show similar signs of weakness or unexplained mortality.

Prognosis

The prognosis depends entirely on the type of parasite involved. In the case of horsehair worms, the prognosis is poor: emergence of the parasite almost always leads to the death of the insect in the short term.

In the case of gregarines, the prognosis is more variable and often better, especially if the colony's hygiene is quickly improved; some individuals may tolerate a moderate parasite burden without major consequences.

Can a mantis be saved if a worm is coming out of its body?
