Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in electric eels kept in aquariums or ponds. These parasites live in the fish's intestine and feed at its expense.

Infestation often goes unnoticed at first, but it can progressively weaken the animal, especially if not detected in time.

This disease affects both wild-caught and captive-bred individuals, particularly when diet consists of live or frozen prey that are not properly screened.

Whitish, threadlike roundworms may sometimes be visible directly in the fish's droppings or floating in the water after being expelled.

The fish may also rub against tank décor or the pond bottom, a sign of digestive discomfort. In heavy infestations, marked lethargy and refusal to eat appear.
