The garden eel is a slender, elongated marine fish that lives in colonies, partially buried in sand, in reef aquariums. Like many marine fish kept in captivity, it can harbour roundworms, also called nematodes, in its digestive tract.

These parasites live in the fish's intestines and feed partly on its blood or digestive contents. A light infestation often goes unnoticed. A heavy infestation can seriously weaken the animal, especially in the closed environment of an aquarium where the parasite cycle can sustain itself.

This condition frequently affects newly imported garden eels, as the stress of transport and acclimation promotes the expression of parasites already present in the animal.

The most distinctive sign is progressive weight loss despite an appetite that may seem normal at first, then diminishes.

The fish may show a sunken belly or an increasingly thin body shape, while the rest of the body appears normal.

Whitish worm segments or threadlike material trailing from the fish's anus, or expelled into the sand, may sometimes be observed.

Less active swimming, reduced time spent outside the burrow, or a fish remaining abnormally deep within the sand may also be noted.

In advanced cases, general lethargy and a refusal to leave the burrow develop, which is a sign of severity in this naturally very secretive species.

The roundworms responsible belong to several families of parasitic nematodes in marine fish. Recently wild-caught and imported garden eels are at highest risk, as they often arrive already harbouring parasites.
