Several species of nematodes can colonize the stomach (proventriculus and gizzard) and intestines of the bird. This parasitism is one of the major causes of mortality and stunted growth in young ostriches, particularly in farms where animal density is high. Adult birds can harbor worms without showing obvious signs while still contaminating their environment.

In young ostriches, parasitism often results in marked stunted growth and progressive weight loss despite an appetite that may be retained initially, then diminishes.
Droppings may become soft or frankly diarrheal. The feathers lose their glossy appearance and become dull and unkempt.
In severe cases, depression is observed along with dehydration, pale visible mucous membranes (a sign of anemia), and sometimes abdominal tenderness on palpation.
Adult birds often carry parasites without visible symptoms, making detection difficult without laboratory examination.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by gastrointestinal nematodes, particularly species of the genera Libyostrongylus (the "stomach worm" of ostriches), Codiostomum, and other strongyles. These worms attach to the lining of the proventriculus, gizzard, or intestines, where they feed on blood and tissue, causing inflammation and damage.
Eggs from these parasites are shed in droppings and develop in the environment into infective larvae, which are then ingested by birds during feeding or when pecking at contaminated soil.
Young age is the main risk factor, as ostrich chicks are far more susceptible than adults.
High stocking density, overgrazed or poorly drained paddocks, inadequate enclosure hygiene, and lack of pasture rotation promote the buildup of infective larvae in the environment.
Warm, humid weather favors larval development outdoors, which increases parasitic pressure.
Stress, unbalanced nutrition, or other concurrent illnesses weaken the bird's defenses and worsen clinical signs.
Transmission
Transmission occurs through the fecal-oral route: birds ingest infective larvae present on the ground, in grass, or in water contaminated by infected droppings.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on clinical signs (growth delay, diarrhea, weight loss) together with fecal examination (looking for parasite eggs in droppings) to confirm infestation and, where possible, identify the genera involved.
In cases of death, necropsy with examination of the proventriculus and gizzard contents allows direct visualization of worms and confirms the diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment relies on administering appropriate antiparasitic drugs (wormers), selected and prescribed by the veterinarian based on the parasite type identified and the bird's age.
Additional supportive care (rehydration, correction of deficiencies) may be necessary in severe cases, particularly in young birds that are very weakened.
Parasite management must be accompanied by hygiene measures and pasture management to prevent rapid reinfection.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Pasture management is essential: regular paddock rotation, preventing overgrazing, and where possible alternating with other animal species less susceptible to these parasites.
Regular enclosure cleaning, fecal removal, and good soil moisture management limit larval development.
Regular parasitic monitoring through fecal analysis (fecal examination) detects infestation before severe symptoms appear and allows antiparasitic treatments to be tailored accordingly, on veterinary advice.
Balanced nutrition appropriate to the bird's age strengthens its natural resistance.

Untreated heavy infestation can lead to severe anemia, irreversible growth delay, or even death, particularly in young ostrich chicks.
Chronic lesions of the gastric mucosa can cause persistent digestive problems and reduced feed efficiency.
