Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in farmed sturgeon kept in ponds or basins. These parasites live in the fish's intestine and feed partly at its expense. Light infestations often go unnoticed, but high parasite burdens can seriously weaken the animal, especially in young sturgeon. This disease affects both farmed sturgeon raised for consumption, ornamental breeding, and caviar production.

Infested sturgeon gradually lose weight despite sometimes maintaining their appetite initially, which later decreases. Growth is stunted in young fish, swimming becomes less vigorous, lethargy develops, and affected fish tend to isolate from the group. The belly may appear sunken. In advanced cases, worms may sometimes be visible in the faeces or when the intestine is examined after autopsy. Heavily affected fish become more susceptible to other diseases.

Causes and risk factors

The condition is caused by intestinal nematodes that settle in the sturgeon's digestive tract. These roundworms often have a life cycle involving an intermediate host, such as a small crustacean or aquatic invertebrate eaten by the fish. The sturgeon becomes infected by ingesting the intermediate host carrying larvae. Once in the intestine, the larvae develop into adult worms that lay eggs shed in the faeces, continuing the cycle.

High stocking density in basins promotes parasite transmission and accumulation. Poor water quality, chronic stress, or imbalanced feeding weaken the fish's natural defences and increase its susceptibility. The presence of natural intermediate hosts in the pond or basin, such as certain crustaceans, supports the continuation of the parasite cycle. Young sturgeon are generally more vulnerable than adults.

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Prevention

Good water quality management and reasonable stocking density limit stress and parasite spread. Regular checks of the fish's body condition help detect problems early. Regular veterinary monitoring with periodic parasite testing is recommended in intensive farming.

Possible complications

Severe and prolonged infestation can lead to significant growth delay, marked weight loss, and general weakness that makes the sturgeon more vulnerable to secondary bacterial or fungal infections. In the most serious cases, especially in young fish, the outcome can be fatal.
