Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in barracuda, whether living in their natural habitat or in a public aquarium. These parasites settle in the fish's stomach or intestines and feed at the fish's expense. Light infestations often go unnoticed, but a heavy parasite load can seriously weaken the animal.

Signs are often subtle at first. Progressive weight loss may be seen despite maintained appetite, or conversely, a marked loss of appetite. The fish becomes more lethargic, swims less actively, or stays apart from the group. In more advanced cases, the abdomen may appear swollen or tender, and roundworms may be visible in the feces or floating in the water after expulsion. Abnormal swimming, such as a waddling motion or loss of balance, may occur when the infestation is severe.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by nematodes (roundworms) that parasitize the barracuda's digestive tract. Several genera of marine nematodes may be involved depending on the geographic area. These worms often have a complex life cycle involving one or more intermediate hosts, such as small crustaceans or other prey fish, before reaching the barracuda, which may be the definitive host or an intermediate host depending on the parasitic species.
Barracudas that feed on live contaminated prey (small fish, crustaceans) are at highest risk. High population density in tanks or aquariums increases transmission between individuals. Chronic stress, poor water quality, or unbalanced diet weakens the fish's natural defences and makes parasitic infection more likely. Newly introduced fish without quarantine also present a risk of parasite introduction.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through ingestion of infected prey (small fish, crustaceans) carrying infective larvae. Direct transmission from one barracuda to another without passage through an intermediate host has not been demonstrated.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
A veterinary specialist in aquatic animals diagnoses the condition by examining faeces or digestive tract contents for nematode eggs or larvae. Visual examination of naturally expelled worms may also guide diagnosis. In some cases, necropsy or post-mortem examination of a deceased fish confirms the nature and extent of infestation in the group.
Treatment
Treatment involves administering antiparasitic drugs specific to nematodes, usually mixed into feed or given as a bath treatment, according to the veterinarian's recommendations. General condition monitoring and weight gain follow-up support the treatment. Improved water quality and diet support recovery.

Prevention
Prevention centres on strict sanitary management. Quarantining all new fish before introducing them to a shared tank limits parasite introduction. Maintaining good water quality and appropriate diet strengthens the fish's natural resistance. In breeding facilities or aquariums, regular parasitological screening of faeces or during routine examinations helps detect infestation before it becomes severe. Avoiding feeding barracudas with unscreened live prey also reduces risk.
Possible complications
Untreated heavy infestation can lead to intestinal obstruction, severe weight loss, and general weakness that makes secondary infections more likely. In young fish or already weakened individuals, the outcome may be fatal.

The barracuda loses weight despite apparently normal appetite. Worms are visible in the faeces or tank water. The fish swims abnormally or stays isolated from the group. Several fish in the same tank show similar signs.
Prognosis
