Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a very common condition in Barbary deer, whether raised in parks, reserves, or semi-wild settings.
Small worms called strongyles establish themselves in the animal's stomach (abomasum) and intestines. They feed on blood or the digestive lining, which disrupts digestion and nutrient absorption.
This disease primarily affects young deer and weakened animals, but high parasite burdens can also affect adult deer living in overstocked enclosures.

Signs depend on the number of worms present and the animal's general condition.
Progressive weight loss is often observed despite retained appetite early on, followed by more marked loss of appetite. The coat becomes dull and may stand on end.
Diarrhea or soft stools appear, sometimes intermittently. The animal appears tired, less active, and may stay apart from the group.
In severe cases, particularly in young animals, swelling under the jaw (edema called "bottle jaw") may develop, linked to loss of blood protein, along with pale mucous membranes suggesting anemia.

Causes and risk factors
Several genera of gastrointestinal nematodes can be involved in Barbary deer, notably abomasal strongyles (such as Ostertagia) and intestinal strongyles (such as Trichostrongylus, Cooperia, or Nematodirus).
These worms have a life cycle alternating between the host animal and pasture: adults present in the digestive tract lay eggs that are shed in feces. These eggs hatch in the environment and develop into infective larvae, which deer then ingest while grazing on contaminated grass.
Risk increases with the density of animals in an enclosure, as parasites concentrate on limited grazing areas.
Young deer, particularly recently weaned fawns, are more vulnerable because their immune system has not yet developed resistance to these parasites.
Warm, humid climate favors the development and survival of larvae on pasture. Stress, unbalanced nutrition, or concurrent disease weakens the animal's defenses and worsens infestation.
Continuous grazing on the same pasture areas without rotation greatly increases soil contamination levels.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on the herd history, clinical examination of the animal, and especially on fecal analysis (identification and counting of parasite eggs in feces).
This examination makes it possible to estimate the level of infestation and guide treatment choice. In some cases, blood work may supplement the assessment to evaluate possible anemia or protein loss.
Treatment
Treatment is based on administering antiparasitic medications (dewormers) from different chemical families, selected by the veterinarian according to the type of parasite identified and the herd situation.
Complementary pasture and feed management always accompanies drug treatment to limit reinfection.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Pasture management is essential: rotating grazing areas, avoiding overstocking, and allowing fields to rest help reduce parasite burden.
Regular monitoring of deer body condition and fecal analysis (fecal flotation) performed by a veterinarian aid in detecting infestation before clinical signs appear.
Targeted antiparasitic treatments, decided with a veterinarian based on test results and time of year, limit the development of resistance and preserve the effectiveness of available medications.
Balanced nutrition and access to clean water support the animal's natural immunity against parasites.
Possible complications
Without treatment, severe infestation can lead to marked weight loss, deep anemia, and general weakness that makes the animal more susceptible to other infections.
In young deer, lasting growth delay can develop. In the most serious cases, the animal may die, particularly during periods of stress (winter, parturition, transport).

The animal loses weight noticeably despite apparently normal appetite.
Diarrhea persists or returns regularly.
The coat becomes dull and the animal appears tired or remains isolated from the group.
Swelling appears under the jaw.
Several animals in the same enclosure show similar signs.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good if infestation is detected early and treated appropriately, combined with improved pasture management.
Severe cases, particularly in young animals already weakened, may require longer-term management and can leave lasting effects on growth.
