The thorny devil (Moloch horridus) is a small Australian lizard with a distinctive spiky appearance, commonly kept in captivity by reptile enthusiasts. Like many reptiles, it can harbor roundworms (nematodes) in its digestive tract.
Gastrointestinal parasitism corresponds to the presence of these worms in abnormally high numbers within the animal's stomach or intestines. In the wild, a light parasitic load is often tolerated without visible signs. In captivity, stress, confined spaces, and poor hygiene promote parasite multiplication to levels that make the animal ill.

Signs are often subtle at first, making the illness difficult to detect without careful observation.
Progressive weight loss may occur despite normal appetite, or conversely a marked loss of appetite. Abnormal stools (soft, more frequent, sometimes containing mucus) are common.
In more advanced cases, lethargy, dehydration, abdominal bloating, and sometimes vomiting appear. In young thorny devils, stunted growth may be the only visible sign for a long time.
In some cases, worms or worm segments may be visible directly in the stool or around the cloaca.

Causes and risk factors
Several types of nematodes (roundworms) can colonize the digestive tract of lizards, including pinworms and ascarids adapted to reptiles. These parasites reproduce in the intestine and release eggs that are shed in feces, which can then reinfect the animal or contaminate other terrarium inhabitants.
Captivity is the main risk factor: a poorly maintained terrarium, substrate fouled by droppings, or overcrowding favour the parasitic cycle. Stress from inadequate environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light) weakens the animal's natural defences and makes worm multiplication easier. Introducing a new animal without prior quarantine, or contact with already contaminated materials (enclosures, tongs, substrate), are common sources of infestation. Poor diet lacking variety or of low quality can also weaken the animal.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through the fecal-oral route: accidental ingestion of worm eggs present in a contaminated environment (substrate, water, food contaminated by infested feces).
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on microscopic faecal examination (faecal flotation), to search for and identify worm eggs. A reptile specialist may supplement this examination with a full clinical check-up, assessment of hydration and body weight status, and sometimes further tests (imaging, blood work) if the animal's general condition warrants it.
Treatment
Treatment involves administering an antiparasitic medication suited to reptiles, prescribed and dosed exclusively by a veterinarian competent in exotic animals, as the safety margin of these products is narrow in reptiles. Supportive care (rehydration, correction of husbandry conditions) often accompanies treatment. A faecal check after treatment is usually recommended to verify effectiveness.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies above all on terrarium hygiene: regular cleaning, prompt removal of faeces, and periodic disinfection of substrate and furnishings. Any new animal should be kept in quarantine and undergo a veterinary check-up, including faecal examination, before introduction to other animals. Regular veterinary follow-up, including routine faecal analysis, allows detection of parasite burden before clinical signs appear. Maintaining proper husbandry conditions (temperature, humidity, adequate space) limits stress and boosts the animal's natural resistance.
Possible complications
Severe untreated infestation can lead to serious malnutrition, marked dehydration, or even intestinal obstruction in extreme cases. In young animals, lasting growth retardation can develop. General weakness also makes the animal more vulnerable to other infections.
When to see a veterinarian
The animal is losing weight visibly despite normal or decreased appetite.
Faeces are abnormal repeatedly (soft, frequent, with mucus).
Worms are visible in the faeces or near the cloaca.
The animal is lethargic, refuses food, or appears dehydrated.
A young thorny devil is not growing normally.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good when parasitism is detected early and treated appropriately, combined with correction of husbandry conditions. Without treatment, the condition may worsen in young animals or those already weakened.
Frequently asked questions
Can parasitism from the thorny devil be transmitted to humans?
Gastrointestinal nematodes in reptiles are generally host-specific and are not transmitted to humans. It is nonetheless recommended to wash your hands after handling the terrarium or faeces.
Should a thorny devil be systematically dewormed in captivity?
No, systematic treatment without diagnosis is not recommended. It is better to have a stool analysis performed by a veterinarian to confirm the presence of parasites before any treatment.
Can a symptom-free thorny devil still be parasited?
Yes, a light parasitic load can remain silent for a long time. That's why regular stool checks are useful, even in an animal that appears to be in good health.
How can you prevent other reptiles in the same terrarium from becoming contaminated?
Isolate the sick animal, thoroughly clean and disinfect the terrarium, and have the other residents checked by a veterinarian to limit the spread of the parasite.
