Signs are often subtle at first, making detection difficult. Progressive weight loss is typically seen despite sometimes normal appetite, the coat becomes dull and poorly maintained, there is a decline in overall vitality, and sometimes diarrhea or softer stools than normal. In severe infestations, particularly in young animals or weakened individuals, dehydration, a bloated belly, pale mucous membranes suggesting anemia, and noticeably delayed growth in young kangaroos may be observed. Some heavily parasitized animals may shed visible worms in their feces, but this is not always the case.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by several species of gastrointestinal nematodes specific to marsupials, which colonize the stomach and intestines. Young animals recently weaned are particularly vulnerable because their immune system is still immature.
