The kinkajou (Potos flavus) is a small tree-dwelling mammal native to Central and South America, sometimes kept as an exotic pet.
Like many wild or exotic animals, it can harbour roundworms (nematodes) in its digestive tract.
These parasites live in the intestine, feed there, and can cause irritation, poor nutrient absorption, and general weakness in the animal.

Signs are often subtle at first, especially if few worms are present.
Persistent diarrhoea may be observed, sometimes with soft or foul-smelling stools.
Occasional vomiting is possible, especially after meals.
The animal may lose appetite or conversely eat without gaining weight.
Dull fur, a swollen or slightly hard belly, unusual fatigue, and poor growth in young kinkajous are also suggestive.
In heavy infestations, worms may be visible directly in the faeces or in vomit.
Dehydration may develop if diarrhoea persists.

Causes and risk factors
The condition is caused by roundworms (nematodes) that establish themselves in the kinkajou's intestine.
Eggs from these parasites are shed in the faeces of the infested animal and contaminate the environment: soil, bedding, food, or water.
A healthy kinkajou can become infested by swallowing these eggs, for example while exploring its enclosure by mouth or consuming contaminated food.
Some worms can also be transmitted through intermediate hosts such as insects or small invertebrates eaten by the animal.
Young kinkajous, whose immune system is still immature, are particularly susceptible. Recently acquired animals, imported animals, or those from large groups face increased risk. Insufficient enclosure hygiene, access to uncleaned feces, and soiled water or food promote infestation. Stress, unbalanced diet, or concurrent illness can weaken the animal's defenses and worsen infestation. Housing multiple exotic animals in the same space also increases the risk of cross-contamination.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through ingestion of worm eggs present in an environment contaminated by infected faeces (soil, cage, feeding bowls).
Some nematodes require passage through an intermediate host (insect or small invertebrate) before becoming infective to the kinkajou again.
Direct transmission between animals living together is common in captivity, especially if enclosure hygiene is inadequate.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian performs a complete clinical examination and asks questions about diet, the animal's origin, and living conditions. Diagnosis relies mainly on fecal analysis (coprology), allowing microscopic detection of worm eggs. Multiple samples may be necessary because worm egg shedding is not always consistent. Additional tests (blood work, ultrasound) may be recommended if the animal's general condition or symptom severity warrants it.
Treatment
Treatment relies on broad-spectrum antiparasitic medication chosen and tailored by your veterinarian to the species and the animal's condition. Nutritional support and rehydration may be necessary in cases of severe diarrhea or dehydration. Complete environmental cleaning should accompany treatment to prevent rapid reinfestation. Fecal monitoring after treatment confirms treatment effectiveness.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Regular and thorough enclosure cleaning, with daily removal of feces, greatly reduces contamination risk. Water and food must be protected from all contact with feces. Fecal screening at regular intervals, even in animals appearing healthy, allows early detection. Quarantine and routine veterinary examination of any new kinkajou before introduction to a group are strongly recommended. Following your veterinarian's advice on preventive antiparasitic treatment tailored to the species is also advised.
Possible complications
Severe untreated infestation can lead to severe dehydration, significant weight loss, and growth delay in young animals. In rare cases, intestinal obstruction from a mass of worms can occur, constituting an emergency. General weakness may also promote other opportunistic infections.

Diarrhea persisting more than a few days. Visible worms in feces or vomit. Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite. Swollen, hard, or painful abdomen. Marked lethargy or unusual fatigue, especially in young animals. Signs of dehydration (skin tenting, dry mucous membranes).
Transmission to humans
Some roundworms found in kinkajous can, in rare cases, infect humans, particularly through contact with contaminated feces or a soiled environment.
It is recommended to wash your hands thoroughly after any contact with the animal or its enclosure, and to be especially careful around children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals.
Consult a doctor if you experience unexplained digestive symptoms after contact with an infested kinkajou.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good if the infestation is detected and treated early, with a good response to antiparasitic treatment.
It becomes more guarded in cases of heavy infestation, complications such as intestinal obstruction, or in a young animal already weakened.
Veterinary monitoring and good environmental hygiene help prevent recurrence.
Frequently asked questions
Can an apparently healthy kinkajou still have worms?
Yes. A light infestation may cause no visible symptoms. This is why regular faecal examination by the veterinarian is recommended even without apparent signs.
Can I deworm my kinkajou myself with an over-the-counter product without veterinary advice?
It is not recommended. Products and doses designed for dogs or cats may not be suitable for a kinkajou. Only a veterinarian with expertise in exotic animals can select a safe and effective treatment.
Can I catch worms from my kinkajou?
Certain roundworms of the kinkajou can potentially infest humans through contact with contaminated feces. Good hand hygiene and enclosure hygiene greatly reduce this risk.
How long does the treatment last?
The duration depends on the parasite involved and the severity of the infestation. The veterinarian determines the appropriate protocol and may request a faecal examination after treatment to confirm effectiveness.
