Signs are often subtle at first, as the kiwi is a discreet, nocturnal animal that readily hides illness.

Progressive loss of appetite may be observed, weight loss despite normal food intake, and dull plumage that loses its characteristic silky appearance.

Soft or abnormal droppings may appear, sometimes with worms visible to the naked eye. In young kiwis, poor growth is an important warning sign.

Causes and risk factors

Infestation most often occurs through accidental ingestion of eggs or larvae present in soil, soiled bedding, or soil invertebrates (earthworms, insects) that kiwis naturally consume while foraging through the earth with their long beaks.

Young age is a major risk factor, as juvenile kiwis are more susceptible than adults.

Prolonged confinement in the same enclosure without pasture rotation promotes the buildup of parasite eggs in the soil.

Damp soil, high bird density, poor enclosure hygiene, and general weakness in the bird (stress, other illness, transport) also increase the risk of infestation or severe disease.

Transmission

Transmission occurs through the oral route, via ingestion of parasite eggs present in the environment (soil, bedding) or through intermediate hosts such as certain soil invertebrates on which kiwis feed while foraging through the soil.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian diagnoses the condition by microscopic examination of fecal samples (coprology) to identify worm eggs. A full clinical exam assesses the bird's overall condition, hydration, and weight.

Treatment

Nutritional support and rehydration may be provided if the bird is in poor condition. Cleaning and disinfection of the bird's environment must accompany drug treatment to prevent immediate reinfection.

Prevention

Prevention relies on careful enclosure management: rotating living spaces, regular cleaning, and proper soil drainage to prevent standing moisture.

Regular fecal examinations (coprology) allow early detection of infestation before clinical signs develop, especially in growing young birds.

A preventive deworming program can be established by the facility's or zoo's veterinary team, tailored to local conditions and the level of parasite exposure.

Possible complications

Severe untreated infestation can lead to marked anemia, irreversible stunting in young birds, or even intestinal blockage in extreme cases.

The general weakness caused by parasites makes the bird more susceptible to other infections, which can worsen the prognosis, particularly in young kiwis or already compromised individuals.
